What do you think of people who'll vote not because of issues but because
of how the candidates ACT?

I know a person who, would otherwise have voted Dem in 2002, except he got understandably angry at the Wellstone memorial and voted for Coleman instead.

Personally, that drove me nuts. :-( Yes, the memorial was a disgrace but what's more seeming disgraceful are people who'll vote out of anger against a candidate or the candidate's supporters rather than the issues. That's utterly petty and, quite frankly, stupid.

For that makes a mockery of our entire system.

We vote for the issues and the candidate who'll best represent those issues. That's how I feel.

Sigh. It's the beginning of the end of this country anyway, does it make a difference anymore?

1. It's a SIZABLE percentage of voters who do just that!!
Or, they vote according to which candidate they LIKE best... And we had better understand this before 2004!

BTW, I am not familiar with the memorial you are referring to. What is the problem with it???

2. Well......
The Greeks, who invented democracy settled on the concept of having the intellectual few determine policy! They feared exactly what is happening now! We decide who we vote for by personallity and superficial reasons, not by qualifacations! Maybe the masses cannot be trusted?

:(

4. 'Maybe the masses cannot be trusted?'
trick is...who gets to decide who is part of 'the masses' and who is
'the intellectual few '...

just asking the question implies the people asking don't consider themselves 'the masses'...

3. It drives me crazy
But I know it's the prevalent way of voting. Gotta have that star quality.

6. It is a prevalent way of voting.
How else did Dumbo get enough votes to steal the election in 2000??? How else did Ronnie get 49 states in 1984?

We absolutely MUST take this into consideration when we choose our nominee in 2004!! That is, the DNC must do that...

5. No...the memorial was NOT a disgrace.
And I have serious questions about the judgement of ANY Dem who would claim it was.

8. thank you.
and if that's all it took to make a person vote for a dickhead like coleman, then it's obvious that person has no core beliefs anyway.

10. Agreed, the disgrace is criticizing someone's memorial
Friends and family planned it and I don't know about anybody else, but I was taught that when you attend an event of that nature, you shut up and show respect. I don't care if they were dancing naked up and down the aisles, when friends and family make a decision on how to memorialize THEIR loved one, no one has any business walking out or criticizing it.

7. "Yes, the memorial was a disgrace "
Are YOU saying that the Wellstone Memorial was a disgrace??? I saw no quotation marks around that sentence.

If so, your entire post is meaningless. Not only that, you are doing what you are accusing others of doing!

DISGRACEFUL!

9. My sister-in-law voted for Bush because he had "better hair" than Gore.
*sigh*

I know, I know. But what can you do, other than try to educate them?

12. So that person is stupid.
I really don't understand what was wrong about the Wellstone memorial except that the Repukes said there was something wrong with it. Even you said it was disgraceful. What was disgraceful about it? It was a celebration of a man's life and what he stood for. If the people who voted for Coleman for this reason are so easily lead around by the ring in their nose, and can't think for themselves, maybe they deserve everything Coleman isn't going to do for them. I just feel sorry for the people who didn't vote for him, just like I do for myself in California even though I didn't vote for the Gropenator.

14. My guess
is that the Republicans in MN don't have anyone who would believe in them as much as the speakers at the memorial believed in Paul Wellstone.

There won't be standing room only crowds in the Minnesota cold for them. No impassioned anguished speakers to talk about how they made a difference, how to carry the legacy forward into the future.

Because they have no legacy to carry forward.
