Army kept a soldier w/brain damage in Iraq - on "light" duty.
This soldier was on leave in Colorado Springs and finally got the tests he needed. At the end of the story, the soldier says that he was told to "come back to Iraq or face the consequences." Disgusting!

"Army commanders are defending their decision to keep a wounded Fort Carson soldier in Iraq instead of allowing him to go to Germany for tests, an official said Monday.

Sgt. Aaron Renstrom was in Colorado Springs on leave and received tests last week he would have gotten earlier if he’d been sent to Germany as a doctor recommended. The tests showed he has brain damage.

Third Brigade Combat Team commanders defended Renstrom’s care after the July 12 attack and their decision to keep him in Iraq, saying two Army doctors said it was safe as long as he did light duty, Budzyna said.

A different Army doctor said Renstrom should go to Germany for a CAT scan, writing the soldier was “unable to perform his duties in a combat zone safely.”

Commanders rejected that recommendation, instead assigning him to a non-combat job in the arms room. Renstrom previously had been doing patrols while on pain drugs that clouded his judgment."

1. They'll do what they have so as to avoid having to draft
That's how stretched thin they are. They'll do anything to avoid a draft before the election.

2. If Bush gets re-elected there WILL be a draft.
No question about it. Have any of the Dem candidates brought this point up? Or are they all weaseling on this subject because they might have to do it too?

9. He can't get re-elected...that would require him having been elected.
I think that's a non-trivial point that we should all keep in mind.

8. I agree proud patriot. This is shameful and disgusting.
This poor guy is unfit for duty and they are keeping him in Iraq. I swear I keep telling myself that I have heard everything and then a story like this comes along.
