1. good
We can hope that it gets picked up by more "major" sources and actually becomes a BIG issue for everyone, not just us.

11. It's only democracy, itself, at stake.
Think they'll catch on?

6. Does anyone think Diebold is being cut loose so that
the rest can go forward with their shitty machines.

I've noticed that there's less of a resistance out there in the media to defend Diebold. It's all due to Bev's work, which is great. But I get this sense that Diebold's getting cut lose so that others can pretend everything is OK. After all, they're just a small Ohio company.

I think it's important to remember that when Diebold is gone, the battle continues so long as computers are counting votes.

19. Something more: Mandatory audits needed
Voter verified paper ballots by themselves are not enough if they are machine counted or machine generated. The machine tallies must be audited regardless of how close any race is.

21. Agreed!
better yet make the code opensource...everyone should have the right to see how OUR VOTES are counted.

13. Whoa...that's EXACTLY how they work.
They sacrificed the operation they had going with Arthur Andersen to save Enron's operation.

15. That's probably the thing that's subconsciously influencing me.
They also sacrificed Enron but have totally preserved the 401K rip off structure and privatization generally.

10. not really trashing Diebold
It's a pretty good objective summary of the issue, concluding with an opinin in favor ot the Holt bill.

16. The Holt Bill doesn't allow full recounts for any reason, right?
Edited on Tue Oct-28-03 05:52 PM by AP
Will Pitt's interview at truthout covers this.

If Diebold goes down, but we're stuck with that bill and nothing else changes, the problem isn't really solved.

It'll be like McCain's CFR bill. It's just a bandaid, and there are ways to get around it. But all the inertia for real reform is lost for 3 or 4 years.

17. the paper receipts will always have to be counted.
Otherwise, nothing stops the program from changing the votes that are tallied electronically but producing a paper receipt that the voter verifies, that shows who the voter actually voted for.

20. The computer tally should act as a sort of Exit Poll
As a projected total, until the paper ballots are all counted.
