Should DUers join the local draft board?
There's a lot of board activity about the draft board today.
(Here's the article that started it all:
http://www.defendamerica.mil/articles/sss092203.html)

This is getting me thinking. Does the ideological makeup of the people on the draft board actually matter? Would a DUer be a good check/balance on a right-winger who doesn't believe conscientious objectors exist, for example?

I qualify to be on the draft board. No idea whether a governor or an agent of the President would appoint me to one, but I am over 18, a U.S. citizen, not a veteran, not employed by law enforcement, and my selective-service status is proper (female, exempt).

Is applying for this a good idea?
Anyone ever served on a draft board before?

1. If you're gay
will the exclude you from the draft? No, I am serious.

3. Not from the Selective Service, if I understand correctly.
Clergymen, amputees, conscientious objectors and just about everyone else (male) must register for the Selective Service. They then get weeded out if/when there is a draft.

I think you then get rejected if you show up for your induction and speak out. That does bring up an interesting question, though -- will they ask? How do they know you're telling the truth? Do they care? What will they do, if anything, about people who say they're gay in order to avoid the draft?

4. Currently, only men 18-25 can be drafted.
Actually, currently, there is no draft. But if the draft were reinstated, that would be the pool.

As much as I am happy to be out of both that age group and that gender group, I do think it's patently unfair that men have to deal with this and women don't. Even with prohibitions on women in certain combat situations, there are positions that women draftees can fill. Spread the burden.

(FWIW, I am against the current war, and against the draft unless it's actually needed as a last resort for national security and not to pump up *'s reelection numbers.)

5. I could not imagine sending a person off to war. Then again...
I hate to think of how loaded these draft boards would become with Right wingnuts willing to send off every poor/minority/democrat that came in the door. Perhaps we do need to really consider this. I qualify and I have two young sons. Hmmmm...

7. Yes
To me its the only sure way to ensure the rich kids of repug families also go along with kids from less affluent neighborhoods.

In my mind, any draft should be colorblind. If the boards are loaded with repukes, they will send all the blacks, hispanics, poor whites, and other folks first.

8. Reps are not asking for a return of the draft.
The only voices asking for the draft to come back are coming from the left, not from the right. Tre conservatives don't want a draft. so your question is of academic interest only. The draft isn't coming back, as most of the left and all of the right oppose it.
