Disney pulls plug on Affleck
Disney has pulled away from producing Ben Affleck's newest project...do you think it's a coincidence that this comes just a few days after he disses shrub?

1. It's hard to tell.
I don't like Affleck, so I can't be objective.

5. Hmmm, it might have more to do with declining ticket sales
His last few movies haven't exactly been successful.

6. He's a rarity
His success was more the result of the quality of the movies he was in as opposed to the quality of his acting. As his star rose, the movie quality declined and his acting continued to suck. I liked him based on his first few flicks, then saw him on Leno and Letterman a few times - wow, he made Suzanne Sommers look like a brain surgeon.

7. Pay or play
Sounds to me like Disney wanted off this thing and bad. For any studio to back away from a project that pays whether the film is made or not, is pretty big, although not unheard of.

JMHO here, but I think it's probably true that they think his image is tarnished. He's done nothing but gone downhill since he took up with J Lo. And personally, I don't think he can act. He may be an OK producer/writer, so maybe he should just spend his time behind the camera and out of sight. He'll still make big bucks and maybe save his marketability.

I'm not about to rush out to see his miserable performances in some misbegotten show of "solidarity."

10. Ben Affleck is a die hard democrat...
Affleck just won the liberal People for the American Way Foundation award for his work in getting young people involved in the political process and ripped the Bush administration and his rightwing policies at the awards ceremony.

He supported Bill Clinton and toured with Al Gore in 2000.

Sad to see the catty attacks on him in this thread. Especially the poster who said he/she wished he was a republican.

15. Thank You! Ben Affleck is great!
I've seen him live at several Democratic events. He's very passionate. He's also behind some great projects like Green Light. Maybe he's too cute for some in this thread.

The PFAW award is a great honor.

Maybe if Ben had a drug habit, groped some women, or drove a gas guzzeling SUV some elitist liberals would cut him some slack.

Makes me wish someone who wishes he was a republican would turn into a republican.

He showed character and guts by his recent remarks.
Most celebrities are too concerned with losing work
to risk speaking out. He's an exception. He's a young
A list actor who needs to make a living for many more
years, yet is risking his livelyhood by using his celebrity to
speak the truth.

If Disney is dumping him, it's cause of his outspokenness,
not 'cause of one dog movie. All actors have their share
of duds.

If you want to know which progressive celebrities
are speaking out against the regime, just watch who
South Park is attacking. Affleck belongs to that
elite club. It's a badge of honor as far as I'm
concerned.

In addition, he's a super loyal classy guy.
He owes his career to Kevin Smith, and is always
there for Smith: appearing in his movies, doing the
DVD commentary, whatever.

As far as his acting ability; yeah he's wooden in
big Hollywood productions. No doubt about it.
Then again, in a movie like "Asteroid" the actors
are props. No need for acting chops there.

By contrast, when he's in a Kevin Smith movie,
with a real plot and a real theme and real dialogue,
he's very good. Catch him in Chasing Amy and Dogma.
He's excellent. He's got it in him.

Finally, to the person who disparaged his intellect;
listen to him on the commentary of almost any Kevin
Smith movie. He's one of the wittiest people I've ever
heard. Like, fall on the floor funny. He and Smith tease
each other non-stop; it's as entertaining as the movie itself.

When a director does the commentary for a DVD, how many
huge stars make time to be there with them? Not many.
Affleck does.

I think he has some mighty fine qualities.
I appreciate him, and every celebrity who speaks out on
behalf of progressives, whose voices are usually drowned
out by the screaming fascist bullies.

"If Disney is dumping him, it's cause of his outspokenness,

One bad movie? Try about 5. Lets review -- Changing Lanes - flop, Reindeer Games - Flop, Bounce - Flop, Gigli - Flop, Peal Harbor -180 million dollar flop, Daredevil - huge budget, modest box office...not exactly a great track record and I know I'm leaving out some.

36. "Obviously you don't get out much"
Fighting words! Why I outta...
Ok, you got me there.
And that is a gruesome list of flops.

But actors who speak out for progressive
causes do get punished by the powers that
be. And I appreciate the fact that Affleck
speaks out regardless.

The guy deserves his props for that.

23. They are going to run out of talent.
But they don't care, that's what they are shooting for...public (Hollywood) people keep your mouth shut about Bush.

It's a brotherhood with these corporations and they are all playing by the rules to promote robot workers and consumers.

In the end our profits will soar.

that would affect any decision Disney would make. If they thought his film would be a success they would still back it. Hollywood doesn't have a conciense

19. isn't Disney the parent company of Moore's upcoming film's distributor
regardless, I would suspect their cancelling the project has to do with Gigli and the wedding that never was (and bad publicity surrounding it).

32. Maybe it is about his gambling?
I am not picking on him. It seems he might have a gambling problem, albeit not one as spendthrift as William Bennett. But, that speaks of an addictive personality--and maybe that is part of Disney's disillusion in this regards?

Hasn't JLo herself been on his case about some of his gambling forays?

Edited on Thu Oct-23-03 10:52 PM by Oracle
like...FOX, (Murdoch) CNN & Headline News, (Time-Warner) NBC, CNBC & MSNBC (General Electric) CBS (Westinghouse inc. and other right wing corps.) and ABC (Disney) that's where more than 80% of American's get their news...that's all there is, and people think they are fair and accurate...then there's CBN (Christian Broadcast Network, i.e. Pat Robertson) PBS? republican industry has their foot inthe door, there as well,,,

BBC? Perhaps.

We all thought Disney was this pro gay, cutesy, little childrens, non-polictical network...think again. They are part of the fascist owned machine.

Don't watch! I don't.

33. I Hate Disney and ABC as well since Disney owns them--Boycott them
There should be a boycott of Disney by all who are against Bush and the war. Disney is one of few high profile businesses that own a media outlet and I truly believe that boycotting them would both gain media attention and make them think twice about censorship in favor of the CONs.
