I hear gunshots all around me,...
,..a woman, alone, defenseless (with exception of my dogs who encourage my motherly recalcitrance by barking behind my knees) in rural America.

Should I be afraid?

I am serious.

I have heard men shooting guns, off and on, for the last several hours. What should I do, in your opinion.

7. I know the sheriff and he knows me. It's hunting season.
:7

I worry more about my dogs than me.

Didn't mean to,...well,...

It is weird, though,...hearing all the gunshots.

No need to live in fear, and no need to gratuitously insult hunters.

6. I live rural and hear gunshots all the time
I think nothing of it. However if it's right near your windows and close to your house, it might be a different story. It all depends on what kind of neighbors you have.

here shooting off fireworks; that will last until after New Year's.
But yeah, I'd call a neighbor and see what they think.

If you're concerned, first thing always to do is call 911 or local law.

10. Depends
Is someone having a turkey shoot?

Running dogs? Is is deer season?

If you live in the country and they are not on your property they are probably not doing anything wrong.

I'd call the sheriff if you are concerned.

19. Hell, I live in Los Angeles
I was raised in a hunting family and although I've never taken a furry animal's life with a gun, I've shot plenty and I don't scare easily when I hear gunshots in places where they "belong" such as hunting areas.

What scares the Bejeebus outta me is the sound of gunshots in the city. I don't hear that very often, but when I do, hells bells! I about jump outta my skin!

So, it's not just you, Just Me. Gunshots can be scary. It's nearly dark here in Los Angeles, so it must be dark wherever in the US you are. Call the cops. Make sure you are safe. Cuddle up with TV or a good book until you can fall asleep.

If it's hunters shooting after hours, they need their hands slapped by the cops or local warden. If it's a neighbor getting shot at, calling the cops is a good thing to do. If it's some crazy shooting up the place, the cops need to know about that. Don't be afraid to call them.

27. Santa must've brought your neighbors some new firearms
I've got one neighbor who routinely shoots what sounds like a 357. Then my other neighbor who is a fireworks dealer. We have all sorts of detonations from that side of the neighborhood.

I know it's unnerving.

Just a few hilltops over is Tweak Mountain where the methheads live. Now, THOSE people I worry about.

People shooting off the guns santa left under the tree.

Of course, it could be something else. I think I'd talk to a neighbor and find out how routine that sort of thing is where you live.

But, those hunters are shooting right next to my home!!!

they should not be hunting in the dark...call the police..tell the police the truth that it has you fightened..that it is entirely too close to your home..and it has your dogs all riled up as well..let them know you have dogs...tell the cops ..dang could they be drunk and shooting still after dark..that will get the cops out there quick..if they think hunters could be drunk..and shooting in the dark..at least then you will get some action...
really let them know you are scared...

it is always better to be safe than sorry!!

don't sit in your house scared..tell them..please send someone out to check it out for you..thats what they are paid for!!

33. you do not have to put up with
hunters shooting right next to your home. Call the county and convince them that you are afraid (ANGRY helps too) --because they are shooting too close. Trust me, I live in a rural transition area and have had to put up with a lot. The deputies should come to your place and check it out. Insist on it. Hunters shooting near houses may have a screw loose. I once had a messed up teenager with a high-powered rifle shoot into my shed--it was so loud everyone in the house was terrified. You DO NOT have to put up with this.

35. Oh no!! That's terrifying!!
I would definitely be scared if I were in your position and the cops should go out there to make sure you're okay! Keep calling them until they come out there. It probably is just hunters but they might be hunting too close to your home without realizing it.

Other than that, I'm sorry and I hope the shooting stops soon.

29. What state do you live in? Perhaps you need to meet your neighbors and
find out if they hunt or shoot targets.

You chose to live in a rural area and you shouldn't expect those who have been there for decades to change their life style just to accommodate you.

37. What time is it at your place?
Here in Arkansas, it is pitch dark, and no one hunts legally after dark. Is your land posted against hunting? If so, and you think someone's on your land, call the sheriff and report trespassers. Even in my neck of the woods, where the environmentalists and the rednecks get into it from time to time, a sheriff will respond to no trespassing/no hunting. Keep your dogs indoors. One of mine was shot once during hunting season.

38. Get a dog and a baseball bat or call the police...
they should respond in a few days. Either that or walk on over there and file a report... chances that at least one of them is the Sheriff, one of his deputies or someone related to them.

:eyes:

Seriously...

Is it the chance that a stray bullet might strike you or your home that concerns you?

Is it that these people might have knowledge that a lone female might be at home and wander on over to your place and take advantage of the situation?

Is it just the sound of gunfire that worries you?

39. I'm sorry this frightens you...
I live in a bird sanctuary - and am awakened by hunters on the bay across the street during this season. Being a 'refuge' from LA, gunfire itself doean't scare me - but it makes me mad as hell.

If it's legal hunting, my advice is have a drink or take a sleep aid; turn up the TV and call it a night. They'll be gone in the morning.

I have been unable to sleep without a TV or radio in the room for years. It provides the 'white' noise that blocks everything else out.

We live in semi-rural America and hunting season scares the bejezus out of me. There are woods right across the street from our house and people hunt in them. Every time I hear a shot, I check to see where my son and his friends are playing. I fear stray shots injuring them.

I definitely empathize with you.
