Churchman: Right jolly old elf promotes ‘idol worship’
By RORY SCHULER
Staff Writer
Lebanon Daily News

BETHEL — While controversy swirls over a substitute teacher who told first-graders that Santa Claus doesn’t exist, a local dairy farmer and church deacon has put the same message in a very public place. By erecting a sign along the eastbound side of I-78, between the Bethel and Grimes exits, Leonard H. Martin has taken it upon himself to shatter the myth of Santa Claus for any youngster able to read the message from the back seat of a car as their parents drive by.

It marks the second consecutive year that Martin has posted what he termed a spiritual message on his land adjacent to I-78.

For this season, Martin toned it down slightly. The sign now reads, “Worship God, who is all knowing & all seeing, Santa is a Myth.”

Last year, the sign stated, “Santa is a myth, lying to our children brings moral decay.”

3. So, Marx was right all along..religion, opiate, etc.
I mean REALLY, how stupid does one have to be to buy into this bullshit? Just when I think American Brand X Christianity can't get any more outrageous, something like this comes along to remind why I despise them so much.

4. Yes, go with the myth about exclusion and hate, and reject
the one about love and giving.

5. Wow; leave it to a mean-spirited fundie-mentalist...
How about using the cultural myth of Santa Claus to lead into the story of the real St. Nicholas:

"He was born of eminent and wealthy parents, and instructed in the spiritual life by his uncle Nicholas, bishop of Patara. He later became a monk at New Sion Monastery. On the death of his parents, he distributed all the property he inherited to the poor, keeping nothing back for himself. As a priest of Patara, he was known for his charitable works, fulfilling the Lord's words: "Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth." (St. Matthew 6:3). Though it was his wish to lead the life of a solitary in silence, he was made the Bishop of Myra in the province of Lykia. Continuing his charitable works, he also endured persecution being imprisoned during the persecutions of Diocletian and Maximian. He was present at the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea in 325.

He became known as a champion of justice after having twice saved men from undeserved sentences of death, and after having delivered people from slavery by providing the necessary payments for their deliverance.

He entered into rest on December 6, 343 and is commemorated in the Church on that day."

{From: http://www.sspeterpaul.org/st_nick.htm }

Oddly, it contains many "family values" that the Family Values crowd seem to have forgotten: charity, justice, defense of the poor, non-materialism and voluntary poverty.

Egad. :wow:

Can't have any of that sort of thing reaching our childrens' heads....they might not grow up to be good little apathetic, selfish, materialistic, greedy, haughty Republicans. :sarcasm:

7. Do you believe in faeries?
Do you believe in angels?
Can anyone tell me the shape of the universe?

Not to believe in Santa make us a little less human. What does Santa stands for? What have he ever done wrong?

Does it means that if one post guards all over the house to catch Santa and fail does it proof that he does not exist.

Well Santa exist in my heart. The part of me that like to see children faces light up with joy.
The part of me that feel so happy when we sing " Cause Santa Claus is coming to town"
What does it mean?

Maybe they can't stand the You better be good part or maybe the you better be nice part.
Why why must we kill Santa?
How can believing in Santa bring moral decay?

With such people abusing GOD name using it in vain no wonder so many people getting disillusion with the churches.
Do I believe in God? Yes I do
Do I need proof? No I dont

Same apply for Santa...... get yourself a brain Moran111.

8. Well this statement explains a lot:
"The practice of Santa Claus, as it's taught today, is a religious practice," Farrisi said yesterday. "It’s a secular religion, but it's not Christian."

They're threatened by Santa.

And :wtf: is a "secular religion"?
