The price is right? Not always if scanned

"Whether he's grabbing a can of soup off a grocery shelf or picking out panties at Victoria's Secret, Tim Douglas' everyday shopping methods are meticulous. They have to be. Douglas is one of the city's few full-time consumer inspectors who in the past three years have caught nearly every store in Seattle charging the wrong prices for a variety of items when using electronic price-scanning technology."I'm like 54 and I'm a man looking around, going through women's lingerie," Douglas said. "It's a little uncomfortable."

1. I always check the receipt before leaving the store.........
and it is amazing how many mistakes are made. I don't like to check the receipts in line, it slows people down but I never leave the store until I've checked it. Unlike the writer of this article, I seldom find the error in my favor. It's almost always in the store's favor. You have to watch them like a hawk.

2. Like today--- I was charged over $10.00 for 3 rutabagas
The price was 69 cents a pound. 3 rutabagas weighed a little over 3 pounds. It was the only thing I bought so I was shocked. The little girl at the scanner couldn't do any simple math without an electronic device. It took her a while to call the manager. If I had bought a lot of groceries I may not have caught this. I am bad that way. I will be more aware in the future.

5. I bought 2 donuts a couple of weeks ago........
and was charged for 2 dozen. I shouldn't be eating them anyway but every once in a while I have to indulge. At $5.00 a donut though.....well, that a little steep! You have to watch those prices, all of our "time saving technology" has lulled us into a sense that it's impossible for "the machine" to be wrong. Bullshit!

3. Have noticed this
lately, I have had several problems with scanning - sale items rung up at full price happens way too often.

4. What's wrong with going through women's lingerie?
I'm always shopping for my wife at Victoria's Secret.

And yes, checking receipts is a must if sale items are scanned.

8. Connecticut Probes Wal-Mart Pricing
November 23, 2005
Wal-Mart

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal says he will investigate Wal-Mart's pricing practices in the wake of studies showing significant discrepancies between the chain's posted and checkout prices.

Studies by the University of Illinois' Chicago Center for Urban Economic Development and the University of California-Berkley revealed that items purchased at Wal-Marts in Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and California scanned the wrong price as often as 8.3 percent of the time. That far exceeds the federal standard, a 2 percent error rate.
