Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios
Edited on Fri Dec-23-05 09:30 AM by seemslikeadream
HOW MANY MORE GEORGIE, HOW MANY MORE?

Sam Stone

Sam Stone came home,
To the wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knees.
But the morhpine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a purple heart and a monkey on his back.

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

Sam Stone's welcome home
Didn't last too long.
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And soon he took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold roared through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon,
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair.
Well, he played his last request,
While the room smelled just like death,
With an overdose hovering in the air.
But life had lost it's fun,
There was nothing to be done,
But trade his house that he bought on the GI bill,
For a flag-draped casket on a local hero's hill.

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

John Prine.

I saw a boxed set of his at borders and was thinking of picking it up. Do you have anly Prine links where I can sample the sound of this song?

Does prine play any instruments or is he a vocalist? I am looking for harmonica folk music to practice playing the harp too. Thanks again for the link.

I have to second this recommendation of John Prine. And as for individual songs Sweet Revenge and Dear Abby. And if I may be permitted, if the individual likes John Prine I'd add a recommendation for Ry Cooder, slightly different style, but both are American classic songwriters/performers

30. It's not political but my favorite Prine tune is
Lets Talk Dirty in Hawaiian
© John Prine

Well, I packed my bags and bought myself a ticket
For the land of the tall palm tree
Aloha Old Milwaukee, Hello Waikiki
I just stepped down from the airplane
When I heard her say,
"Waka waka nuka licka, waka waka nuka licka
Would you like a lei? Eh?"

Chorus
Let's talk dirty in Hawaiian
Whisper in my ear
Kicka pooka mok a wa wahini
Are the words I long to hear
Lay your coconut on my tiki
What the hecka mooka mooka dear
Let's talk dirty in Hawaiian
Say the words I long to hear

It's a ukulele Honolulu sunset
Listen to the grass skirts sway
Drinking rum from a pineapple
Out on Honolulu Bay
The steel guitars all playing
While she's talking with her hands
Gimme gimme oka doka make a wish and wanta polka
Words I understand Hey!

Repeat Chorus

Well, I boughta lota junka with my moolah
And sent it to the folks back home
I never had the chance to dance the hula
Well, I guess I should have known
When you start talking to the sweet wahini
Walking in the pale moonlight
Ohka noka whatta setta knocka-rocka-sis-boom-boccas
Hope I said it right Oh!

Repeat Chorus

Let's talk dirty in Hawaiian
Say the words I long to hear
spoken: Aloha

14. That song is one of John´s
earliest he recorded in the 70´s. He was in the Army during Viet Nam fortunatly he was stationed in Germany. He could have easily been a name on the wall in D.C. and the world would have been a lesser place without his lyrics.....(¨Oodles of light what a beautiful sight both of God´s eyes are shining tonight. Rays and beams of incredible dreams and I am a quiet man¨). I often wonder about all the talent, inventions and other good stuff lost forever from young people killed in senseless wars. Buy his music you won´t be sorry.

17. Your post reminds me of this Kate Bush song - Army dreamers
Edited on Fri Dec-23-05 03:17 PM by seemslikeadream

B.f.p.o.
Army dreamers.
Mammy’s hero.
B.f.p.o.
Mammy’s hero.

Our little army boy
Is coming home from b.f.p.o.
I’ve a bunch of purple flowers
To decorate a mammy’s hero.

Mourning in the aerodrome,
The weather warmer, he is colder.
Four men in uniform
To carry home my little soldier.

What could he do?
Should have been a rock star.
But he didn’t have the money for a guitar.
What could he do?
Should have been a politician.
But he never had a proper education.
What could he do?
Should have been a father.
But he never even made it to his twenties.
What a waste --
Army dreamers.
Ooh, what a waste of
Army dreamers.

Tears o’er a tin box.
Oh, jesus christ, he wasn’t to know,
Like a chicken with a fox,
He couldn’t win the war with ego.

Give the kid the pick of pips,
And give him all your stripes and ribbons.
Now he’s sitting in his hole,
He might as well have buttons and bows.

Ooh, what a waste of all that
Army dreamers,
Army dreamers,
Army dreamers, oh...

(b.f.p.o.)
Did-n-did-n-did-n-dum...
Army dreamers.
Did-n-did-n-did-n-dum...
(mammy’s hero.)
(b.f.p.o.)
Army dreamers.
(mammy’s hero.)
(b.f.p.o.)
No harm heroes.
(mammy’s hero.)
(b.f.p.o.)
Army dreamers.
(mammy’s hero.)
(b.f.p.o.)
No harm heroes.

32. Beauty and silence both run deep

Strolling down the highway with my shoes in my hand
I don't talk much I'm a quiet man
Beauty and silence both run deep
And running like crazy while you are alseep

You got news for me,I got nothing for you
Don't pin your blues on me
Just go ahead and do whatever you wish to

Last monday night I saw a fight
Between wednesday and thursday over saturday night
Tuesday asked me what was going on I said,
"sunday's in the meadow and friday's in the corn."

You got news for me,I got nothing for you
Don't pin your blues on me
Just go ahead and do whatever you wish to

Hocus-pocus, maladjusted
Don't you think my tears get rusted
Steady losing means you ain't using
What you really think is right

You got news for me,I got nothing for you
Don't pin your blues on me
Just go ahead and do whatever you wish to

Oodles of light what a beautiful sight
Both of god's eyes are shining tonight
Rays and beams of incredible dreams
And I am a quiet man.

Oodles of light what a beautiful sight
Both of god's eyes are shining tonight
Rays and beams of incredible dreams
And I am a quiet man.

Oodles of light what a beautiful sight
Both of god's eyes are shining tonight
Rays and beams of incredible dreams
And I am a quiet man.

Just to turn the old screw
They screw you when you're sleeping
They try to screw you blind

You might go to church
And sit down in a pew
Those humans who ain't human
Could be sittin' right next to you
They talk about your family
They talk about your clothes
When they don't know their own ass
From their own elbows

Jealousy and stupidity
Don't equal harmony

Country star John Prine slams Bush
Oct 18, 2005, 3:40 GMT
printer friendly email this article

Country star John Prine has launched a scathing attack on US President George W Bush, because he can't contain his anger over the war in Iraq.

The Fair And Square hitmaker uses his song Some Humans Ain'T Human to take aim at the American leader, and cites Bush's nearby visit to his Ireland home as the final motivation to voice his distaste.

The lyrics read: "You're feeling freedom and the world's off your back/Some cowboy from Texas starts his own war in Iraq?"

He explains, "I have a place 45 minutes from Shannon. Bush made a visit to Shannon airport and they bought out the entire Irish army to keep the anti-war protesters at bay. I was already totally opposed to the Bush administration but not to the point where I felt like writing a song about it.

"He takes cheap shots, so I thought that one good turn deserved another." "

20. masters of war = family bush
"Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead"

23. May God have mercy on their mortal souls
for the death and destruction they have created

No Man Can Find The War

Photographs of guns and flame
Scarlet skull and distant game
Bayonet and jungle grin
Nightmares dreamed by bleeding men
Lookouts tremble on the shore
But no man can find the war

Tape recorders echo scream
Orders fly like bullet stream
Drums and cannons laugh aloud
Whistles come from ashen shroud
Leaders damn the world and roar
But no man can find the war

Is the war across the sea?
Is the war behind the sky?
Have you each and all gone blind:
Is the war inside your mind?

Humans weep at human death
All the talkers lose their breath
Movies paint a chaos tale
Singers see and poets wail
All the world kows the score
But no man can find the war

28. I love the way he's been introducing this song for the past two years:
He says "This is an old song of mine, I hadn't sung it in a very long time, and figured I'd put it on the shelf and never need to sing it again. But then the president of the United States proved me wrong".
