I worry about folks who say bush is the best president we ever had
there are so many of our fellow citizens who call into cspan and say this exact thing, that bush is THE greatest president in all u.s. history, and they say it with a straight face and they really, honestly mean it, or so it would seem.

i worry about the millions of weirdos who actually believe this. and i also suspect that they don't really believe while they are saying it, they are just saying it to hear themselves say it, and maybe to convince themselves that it's true.

anyway, i worry about these weirdos.

2. They will then say that Bush was a victim of the liberals trying to
destroy american values. Remember even after Reagans death they still view him as a great leader and the iran contra thing was lies cooked up by liberals trying to tarnish his great name.

9. They are strangely silent
After years of hearing my repuke acquintences crow about how wonderful the shrub is, they've grown stangely quiet in the last several months.

7. Even Hitler had his "true believers..."
Edited on Fri Dec-23-05 07:40 AM by Cooley Hurd
I just watched Downfall, the movie about Hitler's last days, and it was amazing to me how many people still believed in him, even after he ordered "Clausewitz" - the self-destruction of Germany, its population and its infrastructure.

I wonder if people like Rumsfeld, Bolton, Wolfowitz, et. al. will someday live in exile in some South American country...

8. They are brainwashed, unthinking, ignorant ideologues who wouldn't
know reality if it hit them in the faces IMHO and their numbers are both astounding and scary because they can rationalize every disastrous action, be if fiscal or military, every erosion of the Constitution, every dictatorial act which crumbles the separation of powers and separation of church and state. They are neo-fascists and their numbers are alarming.

10. I know one.
This guy is a truck driver, a teamster, and his reason?

The Democrats will take his guns away.

I tried to tell him that the barn door was left open too long, that the repuke's were using that issue to scare him and that they can NEVER take his guns away.

Doesn't matter to him, all the other crap is nothing to him, the union busting, the war, the environment...he's drank deeply of the lies.

How do you counter that?

13. I know morons like that too.
I told him that the majority even on a liberal site like DU have guns. He didn't care and used a childish example of how Feinstein of California had a gun bill that would restrict ownership. He said he sent a letter to her and he also bought a bunch of guns and ammo and enjoyed shooting them off. I asked if the bill passed - he sheepishly said no. I told him he was acting like a child by buying guns and shooting ammo like that (he's 70 years old) - he had no response to that. I told him that if the Republicans keep being so ignorant and taking our rights away that liberal think they might need their guns to protect themselves against Republicans. That got his attantion - this guy hates Bush as much as I do for taking rights and he hadn't thought about liberals with guns. I told him he "better wake up" :D He fell silent.

11. Here's my analogy on what has happened to republicans...
Did you ever know that guy who loved to talk trash and brag about how good he was at something? Maybe basketball, maybe skateboarding, whatever. He would talk so much shit about how he could do it better, faster, quicker, more effective and for a while maybe you even believed him. Then when he finally gets his shot, completely whiffs at whatever activity it was. He can barely dribble a basketball, stand up on a skateboard without falling, whatever. Then when he's finally exposed unbelievably the trash talking and excuses become even MORE pronounced rather than what normal human behavior and logic would dictate which is perhaps a dose of humility.

That is the modern republican party. Then spent 8 years under Clinton talking trash and about how they could pick a better president and how if THEY got the ball they would do it better. Well they finally got the ball, the whole goddamned court and the whole enchilada to themselves and were told: Here go for it. Show us what you got. And predicatably they completely whiffed and everything they've touched has turned to shit. So now rather than a dose of humility for being exposed they do nothing but cling harder to the excuses and the blame.

18. Good point vi5
Bush is wobbling on a skateboard now. That's a good visual since we all know he'd break his damn neck on a skateboard. Maybe we should all send skateboards to the White House as Christmas gifts or holiday gifts or whatever.

12. Yep, my Mom. Old, sick, and on Social Security. Been getting hit by
this administration in every way they can hit her. Cuts is medical care, he Social Security ain't what you'd refer to as being security, and she can't claim ignorance on what he's been up to because I've made damn sure she knows. But she still thinks he's the best. The only guy out there who's up to making sure that this country is safe (from what I'm not exactly sure).

If she wasn't old and sick, I wouldn't speak to her. As it is, I don't call her nearly as much as I used to. But I'm just so pissed off.

And this is a woman who voted for Adlai Stevenson.

15. I met a Bushbot last night at a party at a friend's house.
She apparently has been counseling some terrorism victims from Israel and seems to have internalized some of their trauma and opinions. She said that Bush was the greatest president and the only one who can protect us. She said that if I understood terrorism, I would understand how the Iraq war is essential to fight the terrorists. I told her that there was no threat to us in Iraq before we got there and I asked her if Bush was protecting us, why aren't our ports secured, or our chemical plants protected. She would not be swayed. I think she needed some therapy. She seemed really detached from any reality but her own. I didn't want to get into a big argument with her because the friend whose place we were in is also a Bush supporter, although less robotic about it.
I think that militant Jews are scary in some of the same ways as militant Christians and Muslims.

16. Nah, it's like advertising. The public is fickle. Two decades ago,
the same people were waxing proudly about Reagan. It's twofold:

1. They really feel "safe" in many respects with their illusion of a leader. At least he's not going after THEM.

2. They feel good about themselves when they think they've made a good choice. They feel smart and canny, and maybe a little arrogant. The guy is there because of THEM. They changed history. Because their guy is in charge, by extension THEY'RE in charge too. They're a force to be reckoned with.

But trust me, after *, a new flavor-of-the-election-year will capture their imagination. After all, I don't remember hearing ANYONE discussing the "good ole days" of Herbert Hoover, before that upstart FDR "ruined everything". And this guy allowed the Depression to happen.

As for the Hitler analogy, I've heard elderly Germans talk as though they woke up from a dream and talk about they had no idea what really was going on around them, so of course they thought the guy was great. I predict the same hangover attitude re. * in the years to come from former supporters.
