What in the world is the deal w/Sensenbrenner and the one-month extension?
Edited on Fri Dec-23-05 01:24 AM by Charlie Brown
I just read the article at CNN, and I can't comprehend what the Republicans' motivation is for a one-month extension instead of the six-month agreement reached by the Senate. Is this some kind of bluff?

http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/12/22/patriot.act/index.html

Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wisconsin, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, trimmed the extension to one month Thursday and criticized the Senate for trying to "duck the issue until the last week in June."

"They came pretty close to wrecking everybody's Christmas. I didn't want to put the entire Congress in the position of them wrecking everybody's Independence Day," Sensenbrenner said.

1. I don't think he wants to debate the issues during the campaign season

2. Well, first
If you have 6 months, you can really spend the time to examine what you are doing and correct some of the things that you might have been a bit hasty with the first time around. One month gives you little time to do that, especially when you aren't due to come back to work until Jan. 26th in the first place.

Now, what other shoe might drop between now and say the first or second week of February that might further effect the changes applied to this bill? Goodness only knows. They blame the spy info in killing a rubber stamp for "4 more years" for the bill as it was previously written.

Sensenbrenner is forcing the Senate to come back from their vacation to attend to this, OR face having no change to the act and letting it stand just as it is.

3. He doesn't care about wrecking anybodys Independence Day
He just doesn't want to be questioned about the patriot act whilst running for reelection.

4. Catwoman brought this up earlier.
Forcing the issue earlier, along with the demands os the Alito hearings, provides cover from the pitchforks and torches of treason/high crime inquiries and impeachment hearings.
This has to be the only issue critical enough, in the fevered brains of our political snakes, to delay the crush of justice. Sensenbrenner, the snark, is as vile an excuse for a human being as they come.

5. Well then, by God, Senselessbrenner can just -
call for hearings in that tiny basement room he forced Conyers into. Dem infiltrators can subvert the microphones so they dont work, and a loud claxton alarm that wont quit can go off at noon forcing an end to the hearings. Any vote on the extension must be approved by at least 200 GOP goons and a shove from Condie and her husband.
