2. Dobson comes to mind
Edited on Fri Dec-23-05 12:44 AM by insane_cratic_gal
Quotes from James Dobson:

"One of the problems with sex education … is that it also strips kids — especially girls — of their modesty to have every detail of anatomy, physiology and condom usage made explicit."

" has called us to be His representatives in our nation and in our world. Select candidates who represent your views and work for their election."

"State Universities are breeding grounds, quite literally, for sexually transmitted diseases (including HIV), homosexual behavior, unwanted pregnancies, abortions, alcoholism, and drug abuse."

"My observation is that women are merely waiting for their husbands to assume leadership."

Oh and anyone who buys a piece of moldy toast on ebay for 10k because they believe it's the Virgin Mary.

14. Bahahahahahahaha!

"My observation is that women are merely waiting for their husbands to assume leadership."

Dobson has obviously never been around my household.

I rule the fucking roost and, damnit, we wouldn't have it any other way.

4. Well, my in laws are fundies...
but here is the definiton from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_fundamentalism#Doctrine
The original formulation of American fundamentalist beliefs can be traced to the Niagara Bible Conference (1878–1897) and, in 1910, to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church which distilled these into what became known as the "five fundamentals"<3>:

Inerrancy of the Scriptures
The virgin birth and the deity of Jesus
The doctrine of substitutionary atonement through God's grace and human faith
The bodily resurrection of Jesus
The authenticity of Christ's miracles (or, alternatively, his premillenial second coming)<4>
In particular, fundamentalists reject the documentary hypothesis—the theory held by higher biblical criticism that the Pentateuch was composed and shaped by many people over the centuries. Fundamentalists continue to assert that Moses was the primary author of the first five books of the Old Testament. Some fundamentalists, on the other hand, may be willing to consider alternative authorship only where the Biblical text does not specify an author, insisting that books in which the author is identified must have been written by that author.

5. literal interpretation of the bible. generally southern baptist
but it seems to be spreading, even into the catholic religion which is really absurd because the southern baptists teach that catholic is not a true religion and they are heathens, go figure. abortion issue makes for strange bedfellows

6. One who unquestionably believes the literal word of the Bible...
as God's word.

AND the interpretations of the Bible as filtered through fundamentalist religious leaders.

7. someone who..........
.......believes in a literal interpretation of the Bible.
Very judgemental.
They always think their way is the only way to heaven (and usually unwilling to accept another viewpoint).
They believe in the devil and hell.
They're also fearful.........both of people and of God.
They can recite scripture from memory but I think many of them still don't grasp the heart of the Bible as in the Golden Rule.

8. Your explanation is good. I was wondering if
someone who is over 50 and 'found' religion in his 40s, could be a fundie? You pretty much
sussed it out. He can if he's in the environment to do so. That's also what I figured happened.

10. I grew up Baptist.........
.....and I also live in the Bible belt so I've been around fundies all of my life!

About your question, yes it's possible but it also depends on the religion. There are some good religions out there, however I would not call fundamentalism a good thing. But yes, it is possible.

And that is not to say that good people can't be fundamentalists. My Grandma was a Baptist all of her life and she was a great lady!! Mostly I think it's their leaders who give fundamentalists a bad name.

9. What the others said, but also
I believe it takes a certain personality type to be a rabid fundy. I think they are insecure and need guidance in their lives. They lack self confidence. Things are seen in terms of good and evil. They feel vulnerable and unsafe and surrounded by temptations and unbelievers. They need the comfort it gives them to believe they are being watched over and are special. I have a few fundy family members and, I really hate to say it, because I do love them, but they are not the most intelligent members of my family - that's not to say they are not intelligent - but not on the same level as the non-fundies, and that is probably due to a lack of intellectual curiosity. They don't care how things work because it's all God's work anyway.

11. Someone who believes whatever their pastor says without question.
Someone who never thinks for himself.

Someone who uses the Bible and religion as a weapon.

Someone who thinks that because of his 'belief' he's automatically superior to anyone else.

That's what a fundie is.

12. A "christian" fundie is...
a person who, no matter how many peices of empiracal evidence you bring up, will always think you're wrong. They hare hateful, disgusting, obnoxious, always think they're better than everyone else...

In other words the total opposite of a real christian would be.

13. Fundie
"Christian" wingnut characterized by:

Rigid adherence to Church teachings despite all scientific and logical evidence to the contrary

An extreme lack of rationality

Repeated use of emotional appeals

Endorsement of pseudoscientific nonsense

Extreme opposition to the 1st Amendment, except when it comes to their right to utilize it

Extraordinary bigotry and discriminatory attitudes towards minority groups, which they support with quotes from their Bible

Overriding fondness for logical fallacies such as circular reasoning (The Bible is true because the Bible says it is true)

Utter intolerance for anyone who is not "of their faith"

High tendency to post Bible verses instead of valid argument

Strong desire to insinuate themselves into every facet of American life--schools, government, businesses, etc.

15. Hard to say...some whack job right here on DU called ME a fundie once
because I said I didn't advocate animal cruelty. I think he may have been a troll, though. I always associated it with religious fanaticism, but who knows? Maybe all it takes to be a fundie is to be kind to animals. :-)
