What does liberty mean to you?
“Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.” - Benjamin Franklin

"The basis of a democratic state is Liberty." Aristotle

"The object and practice of Liberty lies in the limitation of Governmental power." General Douglas MacArthur

"The main political problem is how to prevent police powers from becoming tyrannical. This is the meaning of all struggles for Liberty." Ludwig Von Mises

"It is seldom that any Liberty is lost all at once." David Hugh

"The true danger is when Liberty is nibbled away, for expedients and by parts.... The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men do nothing." Edmund Burke

"I would rather be exposed to the inconvenience attending too much Liberty than those attending too small degree of it." Thomas Jefferson

"If we do not believe in freedom of speech for those we despise we do not believe in it at all." - Noam Chomsky

“When liberty comes with hands dabbled in blood it is hard to shake hands with her.” Oscar Wilde

“America was established not to create wealth but to realize a vision, to realize an ideal - to discover and maintain liberty among men.” Woodrow Wilson

“As long as I have any choice, I will stay only in a country where political liberty, toleration, and equality of all citizens before the law are the rule.” Albert Einstein

“Once we roared like lions for liberty; now we bleat like sheep for security! The solution for America's problem is not in terms of big government, but it is in big men over whom nobody stands in control but God.” Norman Vincent Peale

“I believe in only one thing: liberty; but I do not believe in liberty enough to want to force it upon anyone.” H.L Mencken

“If the events of September 11, 2001, have proven anything, it's that the terrorists can attack us, but they can't take away what makes us American - our freedom, our liberty, our civil rights. No, only Attorney General John Ashcroft can do that.” Jon Stewart

5. It means the government of the people, by the people, and
for the people will stand with the people against the powerful.

That hasn't been the case for a very, very long time, and neither party has the will to change it.

6. It means having the freedom to be who I am and to be able to grow into

something different if my travels through life lead me in a different direction.

It means the same freedom for everyone else.

It means respecting each other even if we thoroughly disagree with each other.

It means lending a hand to a fellow traveler and accepting a hand offered by another when needed.

It means caring and sharing for and with each other.

It means diversity and integration of cultures and in education and living.

It means freedom from fear and coersion.

It means eternal viligence...

10. Great post!
Seems very appropriate today considering that Bush is trying to take away our liberties. I like the David Hugh quote about how liberty is never lost all at once. It will just get nibbled away until Bush is the dictator he wants to be.
