Iraq's election result: a divided nation (UK Independent)
Just as Bush is patting himself on the back for having 'successful' elections in Iraq with lots of purple fingers!

Iraq is disintegrating. The first results from the parliamentary election last week show the country is dividing between Shia, Sunni and Kurdish regions.

Religious fundamentalists now have the upper hand. The secular and nationalist candidate backed by the US and Britain was humiliatingly defeated.

The election marks the final shipwreck of American and British hopes of establishing a pro-Western secular democracy in a united Iraq.

ho ho ho!

1. Iraq will now become a haven for terrorists because of *.
Iraq should have never been touched. America needed to stay in Afganistan and deal with Pakistan if there was to be a "real war against the terrorists".

7. Stay the course. Do not give in to defeatism. I don't expect you to agree
with everything I do. The Shiites are on the march. Give fundamentalist tyranny a chance.

We took their greatest strategic rival in the region, destroyed its military and virtually handed over the reins of government. I'm sure glad we're sacrificing the lives of young soldiers to advance the cause of Shiite fundamentalism in Southern and Central Iraq. My guess is even the Israeli generals who might have celebrated the destruction of Iraq's armies are wondering what kind of Pandora's box has opened in the fertile crescent. And the Turks must be elated by the rise of Kurdish nationalism too. As bad as Saddam and the Baathist were, they were manageable, containable, and deter-able since their overarching goal was to retain power not spread jihad.

If you couple these events with the general degeneration of US influence with allies within and outside NATO, and the rise of anti-American governments in this hemisphere (Venezuela and Bolivia), historians must someday point to the unlawful invasion of Iraq as THE watershed point in the decline of America's post-cold war Hegemony. Classic imperial over-reach.
