Is it time we blame the "liberal media"...?
Just as Bush did the other day when he decided to go around the major media and take his argument to the local and regional stations around the country? He didn't think they were reporting the "good news" enough that was coming out of Iraq. So he attacks the "liberal media". Perhaps there is a lesson there for the rest of us?

The media reacts to the criticism. And the Repubs understand that. Maybe it is time for us to do the same? As they ridicule each and every Democratic candidate as somehow not measuring up to the moron in the White House and as they ignore big stories and sweep others under the rug, we struggle each day to get out our message. Are we too kind to the Fourth Estate?

2. I haven't been too kind.
I've already cancelled my subscriptions to Time, Newsweek, US News, the AZRepublic and my local small-town rag. I rarely turn on the T.V., and when I do, it's usually to watch old reruns.

13. Newsweek has actually been very good this year of reporting actual
News. They have not been very kind to Bush* this whole year. They certainly can not be referred to as liberal but they are fair. They have as many negative stories on this administration as positive.

14. They may be fair now.
But it's been a long time coming. I subscribed to their magazine for almost 20 years. I dumped them during the shrub-love fest of 2000. I do buy an issue here and there if it's damning to bush, however, I have no plans to reinstate my subscription.

3. They don't want to destroy or ignore the "liberal media"...
They only want them to report from their perspective only. They love the "liberal media". They just have to practice "tough love" with them to get what they want...and they usually get it...

4. gee whiz, which of our "fearless leaders" is gonna do that?
I'd really like to know.

Oh yeah, we don't have any leaders. Duh. My bad.

What do you recommend for accomplishing this? Seems like everyone here already e-mails all the media outlets. At least I do, and I'm assuming others do, too.

To no effect as far as I can tell.

7. First, we must recongize the problem...
Which many, like yourself, already do. But I'm not sure that there are that many of our "leaders" or the masses themselves that see this as a problem or recognize how the Repubs use the ol' "liberal media" ruse...?

6. Too kind? The media made it possible for G.W. Bush to steal
Edited on Tue Oct-21-03 09:53 AM by Flying_Pig
the presidency. They made it possible for him to enact some of the most perverse right-wing legislation this nation has ever seen. They made it possible for Bush, and his PNAC cabal, to execute the invasion of Iraq. And now, as the 04' elections approach, I suspect they will try to keep him in office.

The fact is, the "Fourth Estate" in this nation has betrayed democracy, and betrayed the people of this nation. They have enabled fascism, and the dissemination of willfully untrue propaganda by this regime, leading to great harm to the country, and the deaths of thousands.

I contend, that the media of this nation is guilty of treason and sedition. Upon a Dem victory in 04', I will demand a Nuremberg type trial be set up for those who have enabled this regime. Furthermore, I will also demand that ALL media conglomerates be broken up, charged with RICO violations, and laws enacted to permanently break up media corporations.

Additionally, I will also petition the new president to re-enact the "Fairness Doctrine", by executive order, immediately after taking office. And finally, the Fairness Doctrine should be expanded to include major newspapers, in areas where there is no competition, such as cities with only one major newspaper.

Failure to extract retribution from the media for their actions of the last three years, will invariably lead to a repeat, and the nation cannot afford, nor do I believe, could survive, another fascist purge.

8. Amen Brother!
That's exactly how we need to talk about the media on a consistent basis. They bear a major responsibility for the present mess we are in, both in Iraq and in our economy.

10. You speak out against the "librul" media
and you are an extremist, radical, or crackpot. The media holds the cards, and decides how to play criticism through their channels.

The right has managed to shape the media by a barrage of criticism because it does precisely that - it creates a barrage of complaints. We respond to the media insults singularly, instead of in mass. We need several leaders orchestrating an attack, Instead, candidates for president (who, of course, seem opportunistic) are the Dems only high profile voices of dissent.

We need a DNC leader who is more interested in leading the Dems, and that would include countering charges from Bush*, complaining when the media "overlooks" significant stories, and leading an orchestrated campaign to hold the media to a fair standard.

11. I wonder what would happen if one of the candidates did speak out...
about the "unfairness" of the media? How would it be reported? Then, what would happen if another Democratic candidate agreed with the first one? And every Democrat in the nation, like a snowball, exposed the corporate media as a tool of the right-wing? We can dream, can't we?

12. Wouldn't that be sweet?
But, that would require leadership coming from somewhere and we are certainly a tad short on that these days. Terry McAuliffe is a sad excuse for a party head, by all evidence I can find.
