Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 04:17 AM by The Sushi Bandit
I'm tired of all this crap on the news.

its time that more intelligent people (DU'ers) responded to this "issue"

7. No, the first time you had it up, you missed the 'e'
It was 'athist' when the question first came up. Somebody must have fixed it.

5. The other side is making a non-issue into a crusade - and you all fall
for it all the way... If the intelligent side remained quiet and ignored those rabid "Christians" the non-issue would remain a non-issue. I don't care what a girl in a bakery tells me. Matter of fact I wish she wouldn't say anything at all - she can't possibly have any personal interest in my merry/happy what-ever after having said it 400 times already to perfect strangers.

12. I'm not uptight, and I'm not only talking of this poll, please don't be
offended. I just have followed with growing astonishment the number of posts about this "war on Christmas" here on DU. I'm probably lacking in humor to-day.

14. It's okay.
I'm not offended.

I've been skipping those threads.

I was hoping they were all laughing at the jackasses on the right because I have to hear their side of it all day long at work.

It's rough having to listen to them describe how they couldn't wait to fry Tookie and complain about godless liberals ruining Christmas at the same time.

16. Oh poor you. I cannot imagine what it must mean to have to
spend so much time with freepers. I think I would either explode which would probably get me fired - or I'd have to be silent every day which would lead to a stroke.

22. Oh, sorry.
I forgot you were from Europe, my mom was from Germany.

From Wikipedia:

Going postal is an American English slang term, used as a verb meaning to commit murder, mass murder or a killing spree in the workplace, generally by a current or former employee. The term derives from a series of incidents from 1986 onwards in which United States Postal Service (USPS) workers shot and killed managers, fellow workers, and members of the police or general public.

10. doesn't matter to me what a store clerk says
phrases such as Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays mean nothing if a clerk is REQUIRED to say it.

look at it this way - when a store comes out with a policy, the employee are required to follow it or face reprimands of one form or another including loss of their job.

when a clerk follows store policy by saying "------" it's being said out of fear - not a heart felt expression that is freely given

to me, whatever the required "phrase" a clerk is required to say - it doesn't diminish nor enchance my ability to celebrate whatever holiday

18. Depends on who I'm talking to and the context of the conversation
If someone at work is leaving for vacation I'll say, "Happy Holidays" as that includes New Year's Day.

If I'm talking to someone and the topic is Dec. 25, I'll wish them a Merry Christmas.

You know what? I don't say either to anyone because everyone can go fuck themselves. I don't put on some false face for the fuckin holidays, most people still suck regardless of what time of year it is and a lot of them suck worse during Christmas/Holiday season. Trampling other people to get the latest toy and acting like a total cock. Fuck the whole ridiculous debate and "holiday".

24. I don't say "Happy Holidays" out of fear of offending anyone...
Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 06:01 AM by Cooley Hurd
...rather, I say it because I want the recipient of the greeting to enjoy whatever event they're celebrating. If it offends a Christian when I say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas," that's their problem, not mine. Besides, "Happy Holidays" has been in use since I can remember (I'm 40), because it also included the "Happy New Year" greeting.

31. "Happy Holidays"
Just because I know people who either celebrate Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Eid-al-Fitr (which isn't close to Christmas this year), Solstice, or Yule.

I'd rather be polite and inclusive than be an asshole and wish someone a Merry Christmas.

Of course, when it's said to me, I don't care. Why should I give a fuck what the overworked, underpaid customer service associate at Sears/K-Mart/Target says to me, as long as he or she isn't telling me to kiss his or her ass? I take the greeting of "Merry Christmas" in the spirit in which it's given, which most of the time is merely as a nice gesture. I don't have a problem with nice gestures.

I do have a problem, however, with overbearing asshats telling me, as one woman did outside Target, that, "No dear, it's Merry Christmas," when I smiled and wished her Happy Holidays. I ripped her a new asshole for that, because she was snotty and patronizing to me.

When the revolution comes, people like her will be the first ones up against the wall!

so I could care less except for the overtime.
I'm not buying presents and the whole thing mystifies me just a bit more every year.
I'm so glad I don't have small children so I don't have go though the whole farce.

34. Any and all are great:
Merry Christmas
Happy Holidays, Holydays, or Holly Days
Season's Greetings
Peace on Earth, Good Will to All
Happy Hanukkah
Happy Kwanzaa
Happy/Merry/Joyous Solstice
Here comes the sun
Merry/Happy/Joyous Yule
Ring out solstice bells
May your winter be warm and cozy

And any other well-meant, peaceful expression of the season.

36. Depends on the circumstances
If I know the person and his/her religious affiliation, I use "Merry Christmas" "Happy Chanukah" or whatever is appropriate.

If the person has some obvious sign of their religion or holiday preference on them I'll use the appropriate greeting.

If I don't know I'll say something like "have a nice holiday." This is to me the most polite thing to say and the thought that anyone is makeing a big deal out of this is crazy.

39. I always use Happy Holidays except to those I know who celebrate Christmas
I have a business and wish to be inclusive to all of my customers. As to strangers, the same thing. I do not celebrate Christmas and have throughout my life found it awkward when someone wishes me a merry one.
