Is K-Mart better than Wall-Mart?
Let me begin by saying I don't have a dog in this hunt. Wall-Mart does a lot of stuff that aggravates me and there is a K-Mart right next to them where I shop. K-Mart is usually a few cents higher but I would still go there if they treat their employees better, etc. Whats the deal on this? Is there a heads up comparison between the two online some where? Do they both blow? Give me the low down. I CAN STAND THE TRUTH! Thanks in advance.

1. You need to fly to the
nearest city that has a Costco.

At least, that's what I've been told.

I guess my opinion is obvious.

27. The K-Mart in my area is a run-down yukkie store
My opinion is not important since there may be some decent K-Marts somewhere. I'm not aware of their politics but I don't shop there either...

It was 30+ years ago but they were a great company to work for at that time.

5. I was reading a thread earlier that has fundy panties in a wad
over something or other K-Mart has done. A search of the DU database might turn it up.

In any case, I've found superior merchandise at both K-Mart and Target for minimally increased prices.

In any case, K-Mart didn't dump Martha Stewart after her show trial and laughable conviction. You've got to give them Brownie points for that.

K-Mart gets "thumbs up" in Planned Parenthood scorecard

K-Mart gets a "thumbs up" in Planned Parenthood scorecard regarding pharmacists’ right to refuse to fill valid, legal prescriptions for birth control, including emergency contraception.

Better then Wal-mart but still very red

12. Ditto on both of them sucking
I worked at Kmart in college, too, and they do not treat their employees any better than Walmart. They are, or were, notorious for scheduling hours just below whatever is necessary to be considered full time so that they don't have to offer their measly benefits/health insurance.

32. A 4 year worker can make around 40k a year, regardless of training.
...or education (at Costco). This includes everyone; yes, cashiers included. They also offer top quality medical (and other) benefits. Oh, and that 40k is in Florida...a right to work state that has a very unfavourable climate for hourly employees.

15. That's a false choice (one hopes)
I surely hope it hasn't completely deteriorated to the point that the only choices are one big box full of cheap Chinese crap versus the same thing next door that charges 2% more and pays their employees ten cents above minimum wage.

The world is not completely big boxes, Support local businesses while you still have a chance.

And if you find that you have an urge to buy cheap Chinese crap that continually pulls you toward the big W box, maybe it is time to reassess. Maybe you need to recalibrate your needs and wants. Does all that cheap plastic crap really improve your life? Is it possible that you would be happier if you made different choices?

Instead of buying an X-box, how about tickets to the symphony -- where real people (your neighbors) are still doing an honest day's work for an honest day's pay?

Instead of the latest round of Fisher-Price toys to numb the brains of children, how about spending your money on books and committing the extra time to read to the kids?

Instead of a cheesy lawn mower that will last 2 seasons, how about saving your money to buy a quality product that will last 20 years -- and buy it from a local lawn supply store?

Maybe these choices don't work for you, but there are thousands of similar choices we can make. Life is not about getting the cheapest roll of toilet paper.

17. Gee I feel just awful.
I chose to purchase an electric lawn mower because I love the planet.

None of the local stores carried it or would order it for me.

So I had to buy it from Amazon.

I guess I should have helped destroy the planet by buying a gasoline powered one locally.

I'm so ashamed...

16. i would say you should go to K-Mart
just because Wal Mart is so powerful and to not add to it. this is assuming you don't have other places you can go as easily in your area.

18. KMart changed their weapons policy after Michael Moore
and two kids from the Columbine shootings visited their headquarters. I think they're definitely a better pick.

But you can also shop blue online, and find just about everything you need.

I decided after this last election that I WOULD shop WalMart. Why do you ask? Simple. I used to go the Mom and Pop stores EXCLUSVIELY, only to see their pro BUSH CHENEY signs in their windows. After he got elected, it seemed plain to me. Why should I help people too fucking greedy to help themselves. All they care about was their tax burden, hence their support for Bush. Let Wal Mart come in and run them out of business, then they can work for Wal Mart for shitty wages and shitty benefits. Yeah, it sucks, but some people need to be hit with a sledgehammer to learn.

In fact, I sent a little letter to my mechanic that said I would not longer be using his services since he supported Bush and Cheney. I told him that there was no point in me paying higher prices so he could get tax breaks. I told him I would be getting oil changes at Jiffy Lube, tires at Costco, and the rest of my work done at Sam's Club automotive.

21. that doesn't make much sense since Wal Mart supports Bush also
i can understand not wanting to go to them for supporting Bush. but if you are trying to stick it to them by going to wal mart instead you are in reality just going to another Bush supporter.

why not look for small busniesses that don't support BUsh. or how about educating these people on why Republicans are horrible when it comes to supporting small businesses.

26. a little better maybe
probably not much. If you have the economic means, do your best to shop somewhere else other than those places. Sometimes geographically it's just not feasible to do so, you could try ordering stuff online too. If you gotta shop at one or the other, better K-Mart though. If you are a poor SOB like I am you get a pass though. You can shop at Wal-Mart without being considered a traitor, in that case. I, however, prefer Target if I have to go the non-Mom and Pop route. Do what you got to do, it's not the end of the world either way, just try your best to shop at Blue stores and avoid the Chains as often as possible.

28. Shop At K-Mart While You Can
K-Mart is on a business course that is purposfully putting it out of the Retail general store business. They feel they can not compete with Walmart and so they do not plan to try. They are divesting themselves of their stores with some haste and moving into the financial services industry. They are offering training to their existing employees so that those people can fill the new jobs the company expects to create. In other words they are taking care of their people before the fact.

Sounds pretty good to me.

I freakin HATE Wal-Mart and haven't stepped one foot in one of their stores in AGES. The last time I was in a K-Mart, it was dirty, unorganized and the people were rude as hells. I know it isn't much better, but I go to Target...rarely.
