I want to know WHO was spied on.
And not any of that "Al-Qaeda related" bullshit. Names.

This White House has proven over and over again that it puts politics before policy. The Plame case is only the most obvious example- there are many more.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Bush's surveillance target list included opponents of his own political faction.

1. Can't comment - it's an ongoing investigation
Now you know why they always say that.

It turns out they're always investigating someone.

2. Now hear this..... and think real hard about it..... THEY USED HS
TO TRACK THE DEMS FLIGHTS IN TEXAS WHEN THE REDISTRICTING FLAP WAS GOING DOWN. Now let your mind wander as to who and for what reasons the spying was targetting. Think real hard.... and remember gw loves you.

5. That's exactly the kind of thing I'm thinking of.
They abuse every power they have for political gain. Until I see a list of names here, I think it's reasonable to assume this "program" was used for political purposes.

3. I totally agree. I bet political enemies were on the "spy" list.
If they were going to spy on American citizens in complete violation of the law (which clearly requires judicial oversight), then why wouldn't this crowd extend it to political opponents? Given what we know of them, it makes no sense that they would not go for it.

11. That's why they never sought warrants, even from a secret court.
If the targets of the wiretaps truly were "suspected enemies of the state," the administration would have encountered no difficulty securing warrants and going about this legally.

That pretty much leaves an enormous window of doubt open as to who the targets really were.

It pretty much lets us know the targets included political enemies.

4. Uh I think that is an obvious suspicion.
Also, I don't take his admission as some sort of power play on his part, but the beginning of a defense.

7. Those people, we people, have a right to know, and a right
to redress grievances. In this case, they have a right to arrest and charge * as a criminal.

8. They spy on whomever they damn well want to
Bush said today he has re-authorized the program over 30 times. The program is reviewed every 45 days. If you multiply 45 days times 33-34 authorizations you get the approximate number of days since the patriot act was signed. In other words, the program has been in effect every single day and constant since the patriot act was signed, if not before. If you want names, it's probably a very, very long list. If you made a international phone call, sent a fax or email, you may be on the list yourself.
