Because if we don't get this, in so many ways, whatever else you are doing on here is idle chit chat! IMHO.
This bill has the right stuff,, and their are bogus things being pushed- there was even on by that Tom Feeney in Florida, won't that just fit in with the far right-agenda. A feel good bu**sh** bill easily circumvented.

9. This bill will stop corporate privatization of our elections in its tracks

and reverse it. It prohibits the use of undisclosed software!

The Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act (H.R. 550) will require full implementation of the following provisions by 2006:

--Prohibit the use of undisclosed software and wireless and concealed communications devices and internet connections in voting machines (!!)
--Mandate a voter-verified paper ballot for every vote cast in every federal election; a ballot verified by the voters rather than by the machines, that will serve as the vote of record vs. electronic records (!!);
--Provide Federal funding for voter-verified paper ballots;
--Require random, unannounced, hand-count audits of actual election results in every state, and in each county, for every Federal election;
--Protect HAVA voting rights for those with disabilities.

It is not everything we need, or could wish for, in transparent, verifiable elections, but by prohibiting undisclosed software, it is a significant step on the secrecy problem (firmware--"trade secret" chips, for instance--is also a problem), and it would establish PAPER BALLOTS as a requirement (no more of this paperless crap). With these two principles established by Congress, our task of restoring our right to vote will be much easier. And perhaps, with the Bushites weakened by numerous scandals and by Americans' revulsion at secret prisons, torture, treason, unjust war, a trillion dollar deficit, and insane tax policy, Holt can get it passed.
