I find Tookies execution a Sad event

He's is a man with unquestioned leadership abilitys and charisma.

This man is able to rally hundreds and thousands of people to his point of view and to his cause.

He has enlisted the support of both societys elite (actors, professors etc), and the most regular joes among us.

Yet, for all his influence, charisma and innate leadership abilitys, he has squandered them purely for greed. Purely for evil.

He has used his leadership to build one of the most deadly gangs to walk the earth.

He has used his charisma to rally otherwise smart people to save him...not children or the ill or infirm...but to save HIM.

He has claimed redemption, while refusing to take responsibility for his incredibly evil acts.

I find his execution sad, a waste, yet entirely necessary.

Given the evil path he has choosen. His life is ending the only way possible. In a meaningless death.

Its sad. But just.

1. Not necessary or just.
You're entitled to your opinion, and we will disagree on this I guess...

but his death is *not* necessary. It won't bring the victims back. There are plenty of less accomplished, more depraved murderers who *aren't* on death row.

And for such an "evil life", doesn't it seem kind of UN just that he'd be given a lethal injection, which is a much more peaceful death than what some of us will have to endure?

Capital punishment just doesn't make no sense.

6. uh, google "lethal injection" drugs and you will find that it's not so
kind and painless as we've been lead to believe.

I waiver on this part because I think that a painless death can be less of a punishment than living another 40 years in a 5x6 cell.

But life is what we make it. Some people may sit in that cell and stew in anger and resentment for 40 years. Others will make the best of it.

In this particular case. I find tookie to be a remarkable man who is getting as much out of life as he possibly can. Remarkable, but still evil of course. I believe that is this particular case the DP is the more severe punishment.

Beyond this particular case, yes there will be people find the DP sentence more pleasant than life in prison. But on the whole, I believe that the DP still is the most just thing we can do to those who stoop to snuff out the life of another.

10. You said living in a cell
is a horrible punishment. While there is truth to that, have you seen the clips of him? It looks like he's living in a GYM, not a cell! I can not believe that a guy his age can have that amount of muscle mass without hours and hours in the gym, a bodybuilders diet and steroids.

9. Like making comparisons to Hitler, the first personal attack usually
loses the argument.

Was that really necessary?

14. It is a sad event made more sad because he has changed and...
is making steps to fix the damage he did as a young man.

15. FWIW, Im going to say a prayer for Tookies Soul tonight
Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 11:08 PM by Fescue4u
If you are religious, I ask you to do the same.

This recent barrage of discussion regarding the DP and Tookie in particular has caused me think about the issue more than I have in recent memory.

Im still in favor of the DP, and I believe that Tookie is guilty and meriting of the DP.

Furthermore, I don't believe his story of redemption. But I do find the entire event a sad chapter as I indicated in my original post.

having said all that, I hope you truly redeems himself to God, before he dies.

21. Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord.
Anyone recall that from the Bible while we are having all this talk of God, redemption and justification?

There is no compelling need to kill a man already incarcerated.

19. There's no doubt it's sad
It's sad he made some poor choices early in life. It's sad he died tonight because of those choices. It's also sad that he murdered four people, none of whom are getting any mention on DU tonight.

20. I find every execution very sad
Killing in my name? NO!

And of course I couldn't be on any jury for a death penalty qualified case because I am against the death penalty.

We even stack the jury.
