PARIS - Pernod Ricard SA has agreed to sell Dunkin' Brands to three U.S. private equity firms for $2.43 billion, Pernod spokeswoman Florence Taron said Monday.

The French drinks giant announced the sale to Thomas H. Lee, the Carlyle Group and Bain Capital four days after bidding closed in an auction for Dunkin' Brands — owner of the Dunkin' Donuts chain, Baskin-Robbins ice cream parlors and Togo's sandwich stores.

2. Supporting Dunkin' Donuts now means you'll be supporting:
From Wikipedia:

* James Baker III, former United States Secretary of State under George H. W. Bush, Staff member under Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, Carlyle Senior Counselor
* George H. W. Bush, former U.S. President, Senior Advisor to the Carlyle Asia Advisory Board from April 1998 to October 2003.
* George W. Bush, current U.S. President. Was appointed in 1990 to the Board of Directors of one of Carlyle's first acquisitions, an airline food business called Caterair, which Carlyle eventually sold at a loss. George left the board in 1992 to later become Governor of Texas, where he was responsible for appointing several members of the board which controlled the investment of Texas teachers' pension funds. A few years later, the board decided to invest $100m of public money in the Carlyle Group.

3. Does that mean Baskin-Robbins, too?
"The French drinks giant announced the sale to Thomas H. Lee, the Carlyle Group and Bain Capital four days after bidding closed in an auction for Dunkin' Brands — owner of the Dunkin' Donuts chain, Baskin-Robbins ice cream parlors and Togo's sandwich stores."

Look, people, I can't give up everything.

8. I prefer Häagen-Dazs, actually
But I have a thing for those kooladas or whatever they are. In the summer.

No, I don't like the Starbucks alternative!

Fortunately, there is a Häagen-Dazs store on my way home.

5. just 1/3, maybe they wouldn't buy the ones with rats and roachs?
War pigs that they are, I don't see why a few rats and roachs would bother them while they were selling a donut, though.

How much money can you launder through 1/3 of the DD's in the world?

32. We have two
One's a small local chain, and the other's in independent. Of course, we Michiganders love our donuts. ;)

That Carlyle thing gives me one more reason not to drive over to the other side of town for donuts. I'll stick to the closer one that's independent (they just tend to run out by the time I get there, though).

19. They are everywhere!
Soon, we won't be able to buy anything that they don't get a cut of. Dunkin Donuts is very big in the North East. There is actually a block in a town just west of me that has TWO Dunkin Donuts located there, on the opposite ends of the block on the opposite side of the street. To get to that block I have to drive by four others! Two of those other four at less an a quarter mile from each other too.

I live in a small rural town without much big business to speak of. We make Titelist golf balls and Foot Joy products and the rest are small mom/pop type places and lots of agriculture. Last year, we got our very first mega franchise business come into town. They built less than a block from a mom/pop donut shop that had been there for years and years. Yep, it was a Dunkin Donuts. Now McDonalds is looking to run a small business out of town so they can snatch up his lot, which is just a block from the Dunkin Donuts. We are talking a town of around 10,000, a bedroom community for the surrounding areas with all of these businesses already located within three miles of where they put the Dunkin Donuts and where the McDonalds wants to nudge out this poor little business.

It makes me want to :puke: that they have their hands in EVERYTHING and won't be happy until we have no where left to shop that is not mass marketed by THEM!
