10. How funny that this very afternoon the cable TV was hyping porn
stories--something about "this may look like an ordinary neighborhood, but wait'll you see what's going on inside those houses!" (Presumably... yawn... someone has a vid-cam and is taping pics of someone screwing... like, so the fuck WHAT??)

The show will be hosted by Rita Cosby.

And we're all supposed to get all upset about "porn" in ordinary neighborhoods, blah blah blah.... while forgetting all about the fact that the filth which is referred to as "our president" has STILL not left the White House, and is therefore STILL killing people.

16. I'm wondering
if those who are offended should send an email to MSNBC? Apparantly this is part of some massive advertising campaign by MSNBC, & they're apparantly willing to stoop pretty low to get more viewers.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2005/12/12/msnbc-to-flood-internet-w_n_12133.html. They have a email address for "feedback" - but who knows if anyone actually reads it. (feedback@msnbc.com). Couldn't hurt to try. They probably wouldn't be happy if they're offending more viewers than they're attracting.

Lots of us find it offensive....but it's over on TPM and some other sites.
At least "FireDogLake" doesn't have the "Titties" although it seems to have gotten the rest of the Ad Package. Maybe Jane Hamsher found it offensive, too.

Only the Guy owned sites appreciate the Titties. And that it's promoting
Rita Cosby is really :puke:

Then you won't have to see it at all. All you have to do is right-click the offending image and select "block images from this server". Simple. (not to mention that it's more secure than MSIE.)

32. I'm progressive (small 'p') and it doesn't bother me
Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 05:44 PM by dusmcj
Let's not profile ourselves, shall we ? Otherwise we may start fighting about ownership of the Democratic Party, and who knows how that would turn out.

I'll share my personal responses to this question, since it contains resonances and subtexts about who the alternative to the Republicans actually are, and in general, I'll be damned if I'll be marginalized or disenfranchised by another bunch of conformity enforcers who happen, for all that it matters, to come from a 'different' corner of the political spectrum. The Inquisition, whadda show. FTS.

At work: my blunt response would be "they should get around more". If a graphic of a neon female nude in profile gets someone's knickers in a knot, they have a problem, not you. A little Ex-lax and a glass of wine, and maybe some Henry Miller or Anais Nin would set them straight. Tell em I said so.

As to here: it's a little ripe (nice lines ;) ) I'll concede. It's also an ad. Which might be a stronger motivation for ditching it - only the most buttoned-up puritanical advertising material shall be conveyed by DU. Harrumph. No third parties making money off the nude female form (or facilitating the orthodox media's pandering for dollars, to take it to the serious lane...).

Underlying all this though are two things:
1. that we (in the broad sense) still feel our pulse race faster, and are compelled to emit a socially decorous cough at the least, when the matter of...

wait for it...

SEX

comes up. Oh my Gawd, it's, it's a, a BREAST!!!! <faints dead away, Keystone Cops carry off body and curtain closes>. We titter and turn about booty and pooty like 10-year-olds, and then get back to worrying like the good little prepubescents that we are about how we're going to get laid any time soon. Please. The US is the laughingstock of the rest of the modern world for the contortions we put ourselves through regarding sexuality, whether among the masses or among the glitterati. Their presses regularly chronicle yet another crusade the Puritan Nation is off on to make the world safe for hypocrisy, with more than a touch of derision.

Our constipation about sex causes teen pregnancy and STD rates unmatched by any other rich nation.

Our constipation about sex causes a benighted foreign policy WRT family planning which detaches US funding from any activity which mentions abortion. We want to tell the world that abstinence is the way to avoid AIDS. I will leave it at that, it doesn't deserve another word.

Our constipation about sex was the enabler which allowed a bunch of pigs who often set the reference example for what polite society calls perversion (and when it starts involving games where state power becomes literally expressed in sexual terms - missing or abused interns not engaging in consensual behavior come to mind - I start to concur) to waste 2 years of the country's time persecuting (note I didn't mispell prosecuting) our previous President for "not havin sex with that woman". (Conspiracy theories about Linda Tripp having ties to conservatives in and outside the Pentagon, and being Lewinsky's handler in the execution of a honey trap, enabled by American constipation about sex, on Mr. Clinton should get their own thread.)

2. there is an odor of demanded conformity to restrictive social mores in the above which will not pass. Anyone wanting to define a profile of what constitutes "progressive", and then demand that all those interested in joining the club either conform or be cast out, you just start it up. Particularly if your standards will be difficult to distinguish from what the usual suspects currently in power try to foist on us in terms of smarmy propriety, enforced social conformity, uniformity and homogeneity, and self-censorship (in short the kind of nattering, chattering, clucking good society bequeathed to us as the meaningless aspects of western socioeconomic class stratification, which various demographic groupings (represented here as well) have dedicated their life energies to demolishing). You want to start a fight over who owns the alternative to the scumbags we concern ourselves with here, and base it on the same beetle-browed hypocrisy they dispense, you will lose. And the venue won't be DU, it'll be on the street. The revolution will not be televised, and it's not a f*ing tea party. Put down that doily and put your pinky on the cup handle along with the rest of your fingers. And stop with the fainting spells, we can all see they're fake.

France during the 1960's produced the memorable slogan, "the personal is political". They got it right, and it still holds. La lutte continue.

54. I could be mistaken, but I'm not expecting this to be a thoughtful
story about exploitation. The ad has a certain, "Woo-hoo! Booby party on MSNBC!" vibe to it. ;) They're just trying to get attention, of course, but it's the constant use of the female body to sell stuff that is getting on my nerves. The boobs themselves are not really the issue.

Consensual, egalitarian and it harm none...

Now of course, we know that vast swathes of the porn industry don't meet those criteria, so let's support the ones that do and encourage the rest to join in. So that one day the spitters and the slappers and the losers who should be communing with their palm but instead traffic in "bitch" and "whore" and other defilement of what they cannot attain wither and die as they should.

Lest we be forced to confront the question of whether we have a problem with sex itself... That wouldn't be very "progressive", now would it.

doesnt mean i dont like sex, am a prude or have hang ups. that seems to be the consensus with people that advocate porn that i must endure and particpate with all or i have an issue with sex. i can not want to play in porn, and not want it in my world annnnnnddd respect and value your right to have it, play with it, enjoy it. just as i am sure there is things hubby and i do that you wouldnt appreciate, doesnt mean we dont have fun with it. just means i dont force it on you

it is very old and very tired that if i am bothered that the ad for msm to lure people to watch their programming or a repug corp using sex, degrading women to sell product, i am sexually inhibited.

further, seeing my computer is on the kitchen table, i now have to bring down the du board while i go about my day, because i stop this shit from going on boys computer, surely i wouldnt leave it here for them in the kitchen.

i am all for porn, and each and every person that wants to play with porn. i also am all for my right to not have to play with it and not have my children being subjected to it long before their time.

64. That could indeed be from whence the "jabbing" sensation arises.
Yep, despite the careful omission of nipples and eager, plumped, and parted lips, MSNBC's image is still showin' pink.

However, Olympia wouldn't be the best fit for the ad since it's been many decades since she was widely considered pornographic or salacious. But I wonder if a tight cropping on the breasts wouldn't have created a greater sensation in the ad.

The ad is very stylized.
