Anyone else sick of seeing porn news stories and dating sites
advertised on DU?

I come here for politics. The internets are full of that other stuff, why do I have to see it here?

I don't mind ads. I DO mind this:

I have to be very careful that no one is around if I go to DU -- if anyone sees that ad on my screen at work, I'm up Shit's Creek.

Not that I'm crazy about the content, but I've usually scrolled past them in a few seconds. I can live with it.

Besides, some lonely liberal might just find true happiness.

I'm female and a feminist and there is just entirely too little porn on this site for my tastes.

Why can't we have some naked news or something? What's a dirty old woman to do?

For the moderate tech savvy among you...

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

In effect, this is a file that blocks certain servers on the internet from sending information to you. Think of it as added filtering technology. You download a file, drop it in a folder in your windows/system directory (if memory serves, read the documentation) and the servers are blocked from transmitting to your machine. In most cases you never even know anything was blocked. Banner ads, pop ups and a lot of spyware just disappear.

As always, read up and know what you are doing before you do it. You WILL have problems intentionally surfing for - um, well - what most of you are complaining about. Seems most of the servers used for porn are also used for ads - and this file will block a lot of them.

They update this file pretty often, so if you start using it be sure to bookmark so you can remember to go back and get an updated version.

Oh, and ditch IE. Go with Firefox.

9. porn news stories are main stream media adverts - dating liberals would
have been of interest 50 or so years ago - at least to me, granted it's not of interest now.

But I suspect there are a few folk here that find the info useful!

13.  You go to the Internet with the advertisers you have...
I know, it's a terrible statement, but it's true. There simply aren't enough "clean" people willing to advertise on a controversial site to help support a site like DU.

There was a great magazine about comic books and graphic arts that was done by the serious artist Jim Steranko. He wanted to speak his mind about comics in the magazine (which was then named "Mediascene") and didn't want to depend on the comic book or movie companies for ads, because they'd control the content. So, the majority of ads in "Mediascene" were for erotic art - topless drawings of superheroines like Supergirl, Rogue and Modesty Blaise, and other kinky stuff.

I complained about it to the magazine. The answer I got was, these are the only advertisers we can get who won't screw with our content.

Let's put it this way. Would you rather have the RNC place ads here, telling you "You're all terrorists, come purge your sins by contributing to Halliburton" or have ads for lesbian movie sites? Hint: as Captain Hero once said, adding "le" to any word makes it classier, as in "Le Sbian," the classiest women on Earth.

20. Its called targetted advertising
Since most people on the internet are single guys, you get lots of ads for dating and porn.
If you watch Cartoon Network, there are lots of ads for toys and kids games.
If you watch TLC, you see lots of ads for power tools.

Welcome to 21st century advertising.

You advertise with who you have.
The internet attracts certain advertises based on its "demographic" of single men.

C'est la vie.

...not Hustler magazine or the S&M Times.

It IS an add for a journalistic piece about porn. You do understand that, right?

Are you really saying that just seeing the word "porn" sends you into a tizzy? Or is it the cartoon neon outline of a woman's body?

How do you handle walking past a lingerie shop?

28. But some of the ads are good!
I have ordered two books and my Flying Spaghetti Monster car medallion from these ads.

For me it is not the content, this is a news story. It is the picture that makes me feel like I am in a strip joint. Too sensitive? Perhaps, but that is the result of past things beyond my control. There are many of us here who react pretty uncomfortably to things like that.

I think it's important for all males to learn as much as possible about where to get porno that women enjoy watching, too.

Such porn does exist and I need to find out where it's available. I promised my wife I'd look!

34. atrios's take on it (agrees with juniperx)
"I certainly appreciate MSNBC's massive blog advertising buy, but they seem to have missed the opportunity to make use of the targeted advertising that blogads allows. Liberals watch MSNBC for three main reasons. First, it's frequently a better place to get actual news than CNN. Second, Keith Olbermann. Third, there are some who are addicted to those occasional moments when Tweety sounds a bit reasonable. The purpose of MSNBC's ad buy is to get people to actually watch the network, not to drive traffic to their site. If they were smarter they'd use the ad space to remind people why the shold watch Olbermann, or let us know that Tweety is letting one of his occasional liberal guests on to have a say. On conservative blogs they'd have ads talking up the Mayor of Looneyville's show. Leave the neon tits to the sex blogs."

I don't know any liberals who watch MSNBC in the hopes of catching their latest fluff piece on porn.

They should have an ad for KO, it would be a positive image for them in this demographic.

These people are all idiots, though, I'm not surprised.
