Poll question: Arnold: Will he or won't he commute Tookie's death sentence
Only a few days left. In one corner is Arnold's republican backers who probably think Arnold isn't excuting enough people in the state of California. On the other end is a slew of anti-death penalty & hollywood elite defending that Tookie shouldn't die by lethal injection.

Arnold is the last stop before the lethal needle. What will he do.

Me? I'm very anti-death penalty. Eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. Life in prison should suffice as a punishment.

5. Oh, but since the Republicans are building 'a culture of life...'
I'm sure many GOP leaders will convince Schwarzenegger to commute the sentence.
um, NOT.

In truth, speaking of a 'culture of life,' where are all those people that injected themseves into the Schiavo case?

anyone hear about possible trouble if the execution goes ahead? I think there are some, in L.A. and other communities, who will, um, be angered by that news.

13. I was thinking the same thing.
Weren't the riots in 1992 in response to the acquittal of the guys who beat up Rodney King? This is equally well-known.

I predict at least a few days of riots.

6. He might. If the polls tell him to. He is a politician.
Like most politicians his ambitions are more important than lives, ethics, honesty, and all the other things they like to talk about but seldom indulge in.

7. A last minute stay of execution
until he(his writers) can think of a politically marketable zinger quip to send him off. Can he win votes from reasonable people with the pardon? is he more likely to lose votes from the right? Does either calculation really matter? These are just some of the ethical conundrums paralyzing the actor's brain.

I think a grandstand last minute pardon is being prepared with an emphasis on life imprisonment and paying the price. Or a last minute public denial. Or a vacation in the Austrian Alps.

What would anyone think about having the ultimate decision concerning their survival in the hands of a megastar import? Every Californian knows.

but I just don't see Tookie coming clean on this. He is too manipulative with this entire campaign. He is very controlling. Have you noticed, he never owns his shortcomings and crimes....he does not even hint at any of his negative activities which clearly exist. He only vaguely skims the issues referring to them in a generalized fashion as a youthful transgression incident, grossly minimizing the horrors.

I support the finding of his peers, community through the jury and court process. There is an extensive list of checks and balances. Unfortunately, this process can last for many years, giving the convicted time to continue his/her life. His victims did not get the opportunity to contribute to society. One can only dream of all the potential contributions they would have given us. I say, anything after the conviction is moot.

The Death Penalty is on the books, thus it is in play. Anti-Death Penalty advocates will need to fight to change this law for it not to be an issue anymore.

14. No one is asking anyone here to forgive or support him
we're just hopping this high profile case brings the light to the horrors of the death penalty. Personally I think they should all be overturned. Killing people, even if they are murderers, makes us murderers too.

15. I have sincerely searched my soul
regarding the death penalty for the worst of the worst.....and still I come up with the same answer......they need to go, they will not evolve. I sense it is my on-hands knowledge of such criminal minds which prevents me from regressing to a former innocent time. Just to let you know, nothing ever happended to me personally to give me this insight. Here is a snip of one of my posts where I explained my thinking on the difference between execution and murder.

snip>

When one's behavior is so outrageously cruel as in a child murderer for example, they are deemed by their society and peers to of committed the ultimate taboo. Laws have been established by their society outlining what is acceptable and unacceptable. The Laws have established consequences for all violations, including First Degree Murder to the worst degree as in the child murders. Execution is what is ordered and sanctioned. Execution is the most severe consequence for the most horrendous of crimes. Such crimes were premeditated, self serving and no doubt satisfying to the assailant. Killing is murder, execution is a consequence of violating the law....that is quite different.

end >
