The World Affairs Council System
The World Affairs Council System
World affairs councils are non-profit, non-partisan organizations open to all who wish to join. Started in 1918, the council system has 484,000 members and participants, 86 councils, and 26 affiliates. Councils operate on membership dues, corporate sponsorships, grants, in-kind donations, fundraising events, and fee-for-service activities. Over 2,000 corporations, foundations, and individuals support council work.
The council system has the biggest international affairs speakers’ program in the country with over 2,500 events each year. Councils also run international exchanges, school programs, teachers’ workshops, model UNs, foreign policy discussions, national opinion polls, travel programs, young professionals’ programs, conferences, corporate programs, journals, newspaper columns, and local radio and television programs. The system has five flagship programs: World in Transition, Great Decisions, the NPR radio program It’s Your World, Academic WorldQuest and Travel the World.
The national association organizes an annual conference, leadership missions abroad, a speaker referral system, international speaker exchanges, people-to-people diplomacy missions, educational workshops, book tours, subscription discounts, operations workshops, research papers, videoconferences, and national publications. It also runs national program series such as World Bank Town Meetings, Mexican Migration, Two Koreas, Future of Russia, Western Hemisphere, Human Rights Worldwide, the EU, Rising Anti-Americanism, American Security, UN Reform, and The People Speak.

45. Well, Then Georgie! I Have 3 Questions!
Why did we have to shoot a guy in Miami because we thought he had a bomb on the plane, if the american people are safer?

Wouldn't it logically follow that if we're safer, and we've NEVER had a carry-on bomb go off on a plane in the United States, that it should be even more unlikely now?

Could you define "safer"?

(You silverspoon cretin.)

89. Adding to My Point
If we're safer than before, and we've been searching people for 30 years, then how would anybody ever think this guy had a bomb on a plane. So, either we're not safer from terrorism, or we've gone so far to the other side that we're not safe from the air marshalls.

38. John Murtha in Philadelphia
Murtha's aides said he committed weeks ago to be in Philadelphia on Monday for a reception with the Chamber of Commerce. But after Bush scheduled the speech in his home state, Murtha added another event -- a news conference to respond to the president.

"I've finally come to the conclusion that we've become the enemy, and that there's no alternative" to pulling troops out, Murtha said Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation." "Every day we're there, we inadvertently kill people. ... That makes enemies."

Article already written, Bush isn't even done speaking yet. All they had to do was cut and paste from last week's speech, and add the part about Murtha's response!

Bush hails upcoming Iraqi vote, Murtha to respond

By NEDRA PICKLER
Associated Press Writer
PHILADELPHIA - President Bush offered encouragement to war-weary Iraqis on Monday as they began voting in parliamentary elections, saying no country has formed a democracy without "challenges, setbacks and false starts."

"There's still a lot of difficult work to be done in Iraq," the president said, "but thanks to the courage of the Iraqi people, the year 2005 will be recorded as a turning point in the history of Iraq, the history of the Middle East and the history of freedom."

Bush said he came to Philadelphia to speak about democracy in Iraq because this city was the birthplace of the U.S. Constitution.

Pennsylvania also is the home state of a leading Iraq war critic, Democratic Rep. John Murtha, who planned to speak on Bush's heels and repeat his call to bring the troops home from a fight he says has become too violent and out of control.

Q: Why do you keep evoking 9/11?

A: 9/11 changed my life. We can't take terra for granted. Saddam was a threat. The entire world thought he had WMD. 9/11 attacks accentuated that concern. I'd do it again
