5. A Republican ...
typically supports tax cuts for the very wealthy because although currently earning medium-to-low wages, is sure to win the lottery someday, because he/she prays to God for it every night and every morning.
And who wants to pay any taxes on all that lottery money anyway?

Get out of the sandbox. The more we play up stereotypes -- the more license we give the opposition to do the same.

Do some real work and actually speak on the issues that are important to you.

17. Gordon Gecko, the uber-capitalist from the flick Wall Street
Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 02:31 AM by Selatius
Can't get more rigid and stereotypical than that.

Gordon Gekko: The richest one percent of this country owns half our country's wealth, five trillion dollars. One third of that comes from hard work, two thirds comes from inheritance, interest on interest accumulating to widows and idiot sons and what I do, stock and real estate speculation. It's bullshit. You got ninety percent of the American public out there with little or no net worth. I create nothing. I own.

============================================================

Gordon Gekko: The point is ladies and gentlemen that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of it's forms - greed for life, for money, knowledge - has marked the upward surge of mankind and greed - you mark my words - will not only save Teldar Paper but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you.

125. What a pompous, entitled, bigoted load of crap ...
I'm supposed to bow down to you and scrape the ground in abject humility because you have more posts than I do?

This is a Democratic and a democratic forum based on the inherent equality of all people. What matters is what a poster is saying in terms of the quality and validity of their argument.

Your post shows none of that. If one goes by your reasoning about "new to the prom," maybe you, being an Aussie and therefore a furriner, should show some respect to Americans on an American Internet forum. Doesn't sound very D/democratic, does it?

Rather, your post reeks of the English class system, where you're automatically "better" because you're in a higher class/caste, i.e., you have more posts. Oh, I'm sorry, maybe you're one of the DU "elite." <sarcasm>

Actually, your post sounds like comments we used to frequently from whites in America about blacks getting too "uppity." Well, f*ck that. You're no better than I am because you have more posts on this board.

That would have to be the biggest pieces of "ugly American" shit I have seen posted on DU EVER!

In case you didn't notice I was having some late night fun in here. And if you look back in my history you will actually see I have defended many low count posters to posters with a damn sight more posts than myself. Research before jumping down a persons throat.

No I am not one of the DU elite. In fact I am pretty hated around here. Why? Because I actually speak my mind and many do not like that.

Now listen up doofus, because I am telling you this only once. MY PARTNER is American. If it wasn't for your stupid half assed backward, homophobic leaders I would be living in the U.S. right now. So you can call me "furriner" all you want but in reality, one day, I will make a damn sight better American citizen than you could ever dream of being.

Get a life!

I live in an EXTREMELY liberal town. It's small-ish (100,000 pop. roughly). I have been involved in radical/progressive politics with several groups over the years, although none right now. I am speaking specifically about PEOPLE I KNOW. And among the people I know the ones who have turned more and more conservative over the years are those who ahve been victims of crime, have aquired property, had children, etc. It can't be such an unusual situation.

60. I'll tell you how...
Most of them wind up moving one or two counties over where the Republican party really has a stronghold. My county is a Democratic stronghold. There are other reasons too, of course....namely land is cheaper in those counties and the school systems are smaller. I knew a lot of people that were scared shitless after 9/11, too and that flipped some of them.

139. Sounds dead nuts perfect to me. Your perception I mean.
A lot of suburban whites hate people on the left. To the Republicans they are the enemy that threatens to destroy morality and values. But to suburban Democrats it's a different dynamic. They hate the right wing because that hatred validates their liberal self-image.

To some, the total distain they have for the left is even deeper. This is because the views of people on the left invariably raise questions about their integrity which tend to undermine their liberal self-image. That is the unpardonable sin. Drives them to the other side sometimes.

But I dont get what the awful stereotype was in your first post? So many posts have been zapped that it's hard to follow. What gives with that???

She was born in a small town in the Midwest. Everyone in her school, her church, her parents and grandparents, everyone in town was Republican.

She quit the GOP about 10 years ago because it had drifted too far to the right and was taken over by extremist religious wackos.

Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 11:12 AM by Rich Hunt
They stab 'their own' constituency in the back? I wouldn't know about this 'backbiting', being a Democrat and all.

As for Republicans - sorry, but for me that's hard to answer. I live in Illinois - you don't always know who's a Dem or Republican just by looking at them (the big hair and all that), although you can usually spot an extremist by looking at them.

I'm not interested in the stereotypes and the 'personalization' of politics - I think the failure to promote civility has done more damage to this country than anything else. I'm interested in discussing and analyzing policies and their appeal to people.

They backbite by snipping at people from behind, trying to inflict damage on the spinal cord. The swift boaters are a good example of back biting.

Never read a book in his life because those are for "librul eletests". Can't find Australia on a map, even when offered a carton of Marlboros to do so. Self-absorbed and full of hate. Superstitious. Intolerant. If lucky, writes and spells like a fourth grader. In short, a knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing Neanderthal who, despite all evidence to the contrary, believes himself to be the pinnacle of human evolution (except he doesn't believe in evolution because his pastor told him it was the work of Satan and he always agrees with everything his pastor says).

For a female Republican, I'd have to say the God Warrior lady comes to mind. Immensely fat, missing teeth, too many screaming children. Flies into foaming-at-the-mouth hysterics over absolutely anything that doesn't exactly match her world view or that Bill O'Reilly thinks she should be hysterical about ("The War on Christmas!!! Dork-sided!!!! Yargh!!!" *head spins around and spews pea soup*). Thinks child discipline is a smack on the back of the head accompanied by "ya'll shut up before I whup ya". Prays for healing from God before she tries the doctor. Wears a giant cross over her Bedazzler (tm) shirt so that everyone she meets will know how godly she is.

Both of these creatures have no and want no actual facts at their disposal. They become extremely threatened when people present actual facts in the course of political or religious discussion, forcing them to engage in ad hominem attacks like "Why do you hate America?", "My pressedent is going to put all of you librul faggot baby-killer goat fuckers in concentration camps!", and the old favorite, "You love Saddam Hussein".

I believe that politics is not about making us feel good about ourselves and how much better we are than those people over there or down there. It's about taking power in order to do some good things in the world. Writing off the 90% or so of the public whom you consider beneath you is a really ineffective political strategy. In fact, it does the GOP's work for them.

Have a nice day!

79. If you are talking about a "regular joe"
Here's what I think.

This republican was raised to be on his own, completely. Likely, he was born into a well off family, but his parents instiled in him the need for independence. He was told that everyone has an equal chance at getting their "dream" but some people don't want to work for that dream--they want the government to help them.

He was made to believe that government handouts are bad. He probably has a deep seated resentment toward folks who are in the system. He doesn't like the fact that a Democratically held country might have a greater influence over him and his family, and he resents taxes that help feed government programs. He believes in the entire Bill of Rights, and gets huffy when libs keep wanting to make changes to that document, especially when they are so hellbent on changing #2. He believes that he should be completely independent, that government should remain fairly small, only to the extent that our borders need to be defended, and that fiscal responsibility is more important than catering to those below the poverty scale.

Emotionally, he is distant, with very little empathy toward others. He believes that people who come to this country from others need to keep working and face the same kinds of hardships our forefathers faced. His family, property and holdings are what he has worked to maintain, and he will not have anyone taking these things away from him.

Overall, he is unable to look at the country without the need to denigrate people who are in lower classes than himself. He is often of such a nature that he is so self-absorbed that anything outside his purview is completely foreign, and he has no patience to try to learn anything else about the rest of the world.

Likely, he doesn't travel outside the country much and tends to be very narrowminded.

As much as we'd like to think there is.

Here are the profiles of a few Repugs I know:

Twenty something, white guy, straight, works in a creative field, not too uptight, but a supporter of *. Says it's because he's a 'strong president'. (Like a strong czar? )

Thirty something, white guy, Jewish, gay, lives in New Jersey, another creative type. Thinks the sun shines out of *'s tookus. Didn't believe I wasn't a supporter. Couldn't give me reasons though. And his partner is worse. Rants about black welfare queens, tax cuts, immigration and free trade.

Forty something, woman, Protestant but not evangelical, but possibly with more money than she ever had before and wants to "protect" it from taxes.

And sure I know some knee jerk Repukes who drive pickups and vote against their own economic interest, but mostly it's tough to categorize them. Every time I think I've got them pinned down, another anti stereotype pops up.

Kerry did win the majority of those with post grad degrees, but they are only about 8% of the population. He also won the majority of poor, low income and lower middle class voters.

114. Everybody I know who fits this description is an
East Coast liberal. Except for the "rip off the public" part. I live in a very upscale neighborhood in an Eastern city (median home price in the multi-millions), and this is a very good description of the residents here. My neighborhood went 85% for Kerry last fall. The median education level in this neighborhood is also at the Master's level, which would seem to belie the assertion that uneducated people voted for Kerry.

And by the way, the original poster didn't ask any of us for a description of the kinds of Republicans we thought were "pulling the strings", so to speak. He/she only asked for a description of a typical Republican. I seriously doubt that 51% of America summers in NE and winters in Palm Beach and wears $3000 suits. Now, if you want to discuss what kinds of Republicans control political and economic systems, that might be a different interesting conversation. I think I would argue that the kind of "Republicans" that are controlling politics in America today aren't even Republicans. But that's another argument...

They are ruling class all the way, baby! And they are the ones who are ultimately responsible for driving the country into the ditch. Ignorant voters have played a supporting role, but not the primary one.

We need to keep in mind who is truly to blame for what has happened to America, rather than misdirecting our anger at fundamentalists in Mississippi trailer parks and the like.

And that's what the original poster asked about. The original poster also did not ask about blame, anger, or who was driving America into a ditch. All he/she asked was for a description of what everyone thought an typical Republican was like.

If you want to have a conversation about what kinds of Republicans are responsible for the downfall of America, feel free to start a new thread. It would probably be an interesting conversation.

ON EDIT: Never mind, I've decided to do it myself, because I am interested to see what other people think about this.

113. "Joe Middle Class Republican"
Day in the Life of Joe Middle-Class Republican

Joe gets up at 6:00am to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full of good
clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards.
He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe
to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and work as advertised.
All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because
some liberal union workers fought the ir employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe
gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joe’s bacon is
safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing
industry.

Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; His bottle is properly labeled
with every ingredient and the amount of its contents because some liberal fought for his
right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses,
walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree
hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the
subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable
money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable
public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medicals benefits,
retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and
died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s
employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or
becomes unemployed he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check
because some liberal didn’t think he should loose his home because of his temporary
misfortune.

Its noon time, Joe needs to make a Bank Deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit
is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe’s
money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the
depression.
http://tvnewslies.org/Day_in_The_Life_Of_Joe_Middle1.pdf

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten Mortgage and his below market federal
student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government
would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his life-time.
Joe is home from work, he plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the
country. He gets in his car for the drive to dads; his car is among the safest in the world
because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He
was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration
because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans. The house didn’t have electric until
some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded
rural electrification. (Those rural Republican’s would still be sitting in the dark)
He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social Security and his
union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe
wouldn’t have to. After his visit with dad he gets back in his car for the ride home.
He turns on a radio talk show, the host’s keeps saying that liberals are bad and
conservatives are good. (He doesn’t tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought
against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day) Joe agrees, “We
don’t need those big government liberals ruining our lives; after all, I’m a self made man
who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have”.

122. No such thing exists today...
Neocons and fundies are what we see fucking up the country. Most repubs I know voted for Kerry in 2004. Most Dems I know voted for Bush. Of course this is anecdotal to my region--the Northeast.

124. two subspecies
the dumb gun-toting redneck flag waving bible thumper

and the wealthy, greedy, suit wearing, sexually repressed, christian business man

both white males, homophobic, chauvenistic, racist, bad hair (mullet or combover) drive gas hogs (penis enhancers), alcoholics but would never allow a sick person marijuana, never been out of the country (rich guy might have gone to Europe), pro-war,

but those ARE stereotypes, all of my neighbors and some of my family are repubs and I dearly love some of them, others aren't so bad and frankly I hate some others. And that goes for some dems I know as well.

I agree with the sentiment that we should probably be doing something to get some of these less advantaged rural voters back, but I also still can make fun of them. Hell, I am one.

126. 2 Kinds...
A:
The bumpkin living out where I grew up 2 hours south of St. Louis, loves Wal-Mart, still uses the n-word on a daily basis, wants to kill of them- brown skinned bastards that "bombed" New York, and has a nack for saving useless crap around the 10 acres....

B:
The upper-class business man, who thinks everyone has a fair shot in this country, doesn't want the gov'ment taking my money for taxes, against diversity laws/rules (the average person described in A cannot grasp a subject as complex as diversity), and is for American domination of the World. (The whole Faux News host lineup can be described as B: Brett, Brian, Bill, Sean, etc.,)

130. This is going to take at least a paragraph.
But then I don't think in simplistic terms.

My stereotype of a typical Republican? Someone who firmly believes in the dictum that "might makes right". Someone whose worldview is all black and white, with no room for greys. Someone who questions or ignores any news or information which conflicts with his dearly held beliefs. Someone who embraces the twin myths of "the American dream" and "rugged individualism" with an uncritical fervour. Someone who equates poverty with immorality and laziness. Someone who thinks greed is good, and agrees with Margaret Thatcher that "there is no such thing as society". Someone who prefers the politics of character assassination and slander to substantiative debate of issues. There's more, but this seems to cover the main points.

When I imagine Republicans I think of my friend's sister. Both my friend and his sister started out equally with little help from parents, but the sister married a banker while my friend became a teacher. Once while piecing together teaching jobs, my friend drew unemployment for a short time. He was living on mashed potatoes and soup. The sister, (who flies to Paris just to buy clothes for her children and owns a million dollar beach house) sez to my friend when he was out of work, "I don't want MY tax dollars paying for you to get a free ride." My friend did eventually land a permanent teaching position, but he has not spoken to his sister for the 10 years following that comment. Republican family values.

This is a 'moderate' Republican, too.

134. Republicans
are people who honestly believe that they are God's gift to the world and therefore they deserve only the best, no matter how they get it. They honestly believe that others who they perceive to be beneath them, deserve as little as possible. They want to own and control it all, whether it be a small enterprise or a worldwide corporation. They have no sense of how a community functions. They are highly manipulative and typically live in a fantasy world dictated only by their personal wants and needs. They are not (almost never) what you'd call generous. They need deprogramming.

You totally described the smug, self-righteous attitudes I saw on display all over Midtown Manhattan during the Republican National Convention. These vermin descended on the city as though they owned it, you, me, and everything in their path.

146. ah yes, The Republican National Convention
...where the sleeze is so thick you can skate on it...where humanoids high on their own body products and bloated self-images fluff and preen among their own kind...where The Anointed Ones flock to ensure that everything will continue to flow to them. These people have no idea what it means to be a leader of anything but a very homogenous group. They seize power for their own self-interest and have the audacity to call it 'public service.' And now they control the media and the minds of the fearful masses, who interpret their brazen strutting as "strength."

Leaving political persuasions aside, we who tend to play fair in general MUST realize that this is the malicious mind-set we are up against. We cannot pander to these people and pretend that they are really good folks whose sins can be forgiven. They are completely corrupt and ruthless. I think it's not only OK but necessary to define and characterize the destroyers of the true ideals of America. We have to speak the awful truth--this country has been hijacked from within.

140. Old folk who don't know any better but VOTE
The Pubs have done a MASTERFUL job in the last 25 years of speaking directly to this group. They speak to them in the language they understand - pick yourself up by the bootstraps. Personal responsibility. God hates fags. Black people are not as good as "us" so that's why they need taken care of. Welfare mothers are black. Democrats hate American values. Democrats are hippies. Democrats don't wash or brush their teeth like "we" do.

If we want to save this little fledgeling Rome before the Nero's burn it down, we MUST learn how to speak effectively to the blocks of persons that VOTE. That does NOT mean follow their example of hate. I would propose "blessed are the peacemakers" be the model of action.

that is all.

gun rack, muffler polluting, (so what), and racist to the bone... we'd all have more if not for the liberals, hateful people, and then all of a sudden, God fearing! Cuz, Georgie is...Take, take, take..must take, it's mine before the welfare fucks grab it for the coloreds...

But, the real ones, the ones that I really envision... are the ones who disdain any kind taxes what so ever, (though they use every & all facets of local and federal government for their own purposes) AND indeed, and without question, they are all racist. (denying it at ever turn), ...The people who make a living with their hands, are the ones to be feared...

In a bombshell...They won't allow a few dollars of their taxes, to even fund a fucking library... "Because we can buy our own books if we want to read or buy a book."
