HOW THE BEATLES SAVED MY ASS! (Warning: ACTUALLY About Catholicism!)
I feel sorry for kids comin' up today who say they don't like the Beatles... to my ear, that's like saying you don't like sunshine or fresh air or blinding orgasms or music itself!
Not only were the Beatles the greatest thing since sliced bread from a musical perspective; not only were they incredibly influential and innovative and ground-breaking in all sorts of ways, including their larger influence on the social and political spheres off that time... but they also had a PROFOUND effect on the course of my particular life from a very early age:

1. Now that's a surprising plot twist.
I don't know if I'm being sarcastic or not... ? ;)

8 years of Catholic school here. Stopped believing in their God in the 6th or 7th grade when they refused to answer my questions, or showed ignorant thinking while answering them.

6. Yep, me too...
I didn't exactly stop believing in god entirely; I'm an agnostic...
But I definitely stopped believing in THEIR god...

Strange, isn't it?... the transparency of the shit they try to plaster us with, whether they're selling god or used cars or the latest pyramid scheme... some notice it at a very early age; others never do, and are prey to every shyster and charlatan comin' down the pike...
And the funniest thing is, the only people those in that second category DON'T trust are the ones who tell them the TRUTH!!!

Ah, what a world...

2. I loved your story (history)
I was kicked out of Catholic school in fifth grade (smoking in the bathroom,Tina LaRosa snitched me out), but my parents made a deal with them to keep me for one more year so that I could begin public Jr. high school like many other children.

One of my three best friends turned me on to the Beatles. She (Kelly) was the one most like me--adopted. Her father's brother was a Catholic priest and although I never had any--ahem--run-ins with him (then again I was a girl) Kelly's father would occasionally expose himself to me :puke:

Kelly's life ended up being most tragic. I think of her often. Me, I've had a hard road but it has been okay. I think of her often, especially when I listen to the Beatles.

3. I've always thought . . .
. . .that people who've had a hard road, but whose smile still works most days, are the most interesting. (One more reason that the repukes seem like a bunch of outer-space aliens . . .)

:)

7. I agree with Crazy Orange Cat's sentiments exactly...
Survivors are always the most interesting, often the most witty and intelligent...
I'm sorry about your friend... but I'm glad you're still here, anyway...

8. I second that...
Your poems, short stories, and essays are insightful, funny, and sad, sometimes all at once!

:hi:

4. Well It's Cute
But I wouldn't say 'looking like a girl' saved you from the abuse.

5. No wonder you're so strange now
& no wonder you're my friend. I'm certainly glad I wasn't raised a Catholic & I'm glad for you that you were saved by not looking like a little boy. K& R for another reason to love the Beatles.

13. You couldn't say that on LP's.
The plastic had a low melting point.

15. Lennon drops the F bomb in his Progressive masterpiece Working Class Hero
"They hurt you at home and they hit you at school, they hate you if your clever and they despise a fool, Till your soo Fucking crazy you can't follow their rules".

Kinda fits with the OP's message doesn't it?

14. How did I turn out alright?
I'm still a Catholic, though I'll freely admit that I'd never send my kids (I doubt I'll have kids, though) to a Catholic school. You want nun stories? I've got 'em. :)

And the Beatles rock.
