The way I see it, the US is going to have a permanent force/base in Iraq for years to come. I think a lot of people are not looking at the big picture and the major players involved. The BushCo team has a vested interest in the wealth of Iraq (oil) and more importantly the desire to "neutralize" threats from Iran, Syria, and so called terror harboring regimes.

We are looking at a South Korea type permanent base system in the making. We are not going anywhere soon.

There will be troop reductions just in time for 2006 elections, not because the security situation in Iraq will have improved, but because the Republicans have perfected the art of deception and emotionalism that has got them in power.

4. If this turns out to be another vietnam..
Then no. We're not in vietnam. But if turns out to be a "successful" war, then yes, we'll be there for a very long time - like Japan, Germany, and Korea.

5. Frankly,
The 1000 deaths a year probably don't bother the Tammany hall Taliborgs one fucking bit. They'll try to make Iraq a vassal state as long as possible.

7. It depends on the 2008 election.

"We are looking at a South Korea type permanent base system in the making."

I would assume any Democrat elected in 2008 would commit to no permanent bases in Iraq; Clark has recommended the administration make that commitment now.

Fat chance of the chimp taking that advice, of course...not part of their agenda.

9. No. Two reasons - Oil and corporate potential.
Oil - We won't leave while there is oil in the ground. Strategically if we are nearing peak oil they folks at the top won't leave because it could fall into an unfriendly gov hands or they may switch to a euro market.

Corporate potential - There is an untold fortune to be bad westernizing Iraq, a McDonald's on every corner, some Walmart super centers. Too much money making potential.
