Families USA: The Voice for Health Care Consumers

Dear XXX,

As we open our hearts to the spirit of the holiday season, Congress may be close to dumping a huge lump of coal in the collective stocking of millions of our fellow Americans. For the next two weeks, members and staffers from the House and Senate will sit behind closed doors to strike a budget deal that could potentially cut millions of dollars from the Medicaid program, harming many of the sickest, most vulnerable Americans—not exactly the best way to spread holiday cheer across the land, to say the least!

So, yes, we’ll need your efforts once again to keep this from happening—but this time, with a holiday twist. It occurred to us that, by even considering the deeply immoral House budget, Congress is twisting the very meaning of the holiday season beyond recognition. What would some of our most cherished symbols of this season look like if they were infused with the House’s version of holiday “cheer”? What would some of our most enduring Christmas carols, for example, look like?

Here’s where you come in: We’d like you to send us your own version of a popular Christmas carol that tells the story of how the House’s budget would harm Medicaid recipients.

Send Us Your Carols Here

Here are some sample titles to get you going:

* On the First Day of Christmas, Congress Took from Me
* I Saw Congress Kissing HMOs
* Do You Fear What I Fear?
* Medicaid Roasting on an Open Fire
* Grandma Got Run Over by the Budget
* It Came Upon a Backroom Deal
* The Frist Noel

You’re not limited to these sample titles at all—just pick any Christmas carol you like and put your twist on it (here is a list of real carols to refresh your memory).

Next week, we will choose a winning entry and share it with advocates across the country. This is your chance to use your creativity and strike a blow against Medicaid cuts in the budget conference. We’ll need your calls again very soon, but for now, let loose the songwriter inside you and send us your Christmas carol no later than next Tuesday, December 13—we’ll be waiting!
