But in real life, an air marshall has about 1/4 of a second.

It's hard (read: impossible) to tell whether the Marshall could have prudently acted differently, especially the bit about the suspect "apparently reaching into his bag" because WE'LL NEVER KNOW WHETHER IT REALLY HAPPENED THAT WAY.

In case you haven't noticed, the officials around us lie bald-faced all the time. They take their examples from the very top, and truth is now considered optional (and rather a bother) in official pronouncements. For all we know, the guy had laid down on the concourse floor and was trying to surrender.

IF the guy did claim to have a bomb, Remember that airline folks are TRAINED TO BELIEVE THE BOMBER. There is no training about meds.

talking about something pretty extreme.

If the guy had been medicated up until then and had just recently forgotten to take meds he would probably still have active serum levels of whatever he takes for it. I'm betting more likely what Tallahassegrannie said, that he probably said "it's not like I have a bomb or anything" and some nosy person overheard him use the B word and that's all it took for the final interaction to happen coupled with poor judgement all the way around.
