How would you feel if Kerry called for a handgun ban during election '04?
Because that is what Liberal leader Paul Martin just did here in Canada. I am listening to a speech he is giving and he is laying out his 5 part plan:

1. Ban handguns

2. Double the sentences for people who commit gun crime

3. Encourage full compliance with the gun registry for people who own hunting guns by waiving the fee to re-register

4. Sponsor a $50 million community action plan to combat gun violence within communities

5. Create a special unit of the RCMP consisting of 250 special officers who will work in communities to stop the spread of illegal guns. Also, there will be a special border security force who's sole job will be to stop smuggling.

Remember, Canadians have no right to own a gun. This may have just won Martin the election.

1. I am not a single issue voter so
it wouldn't have changed my vote. Personally, I am not for banning handguns.

2. In a word, Depressed
IMNSHO Gun control, and it's most visible spokesperson Sara Brady, has been an albatross around our neck for the last two election cycles.

Clinton himself said that Gore lost TN and AR because of the gun owners. If Gore had won them Florida would have been irrelevant.

Proposing a complete handgun ban would give the right exactly what they need to beat us over the head again with 80 million, regularly voting gun owners.

Plus there are already 56 (?) states with concealed carry laws, soon to be 57 with Wisconsin passing the Personal Protection Act yesterday. That would make every citizen with a ccw a criminal.

Now, let's all wait for the inevitable postings about how Americans really, really love gun control and surveys from the VPC will be cited endlessly.

They just never seem to get around to voting like they do.

3. Canadian gun laws are nonsensical and half-assed.
Guns aren't nearly as big an thing here as they are Stateside. Many of use don't really understand the issue, or have any interest in it.

9. I wouldn't have voted for him.
I'm not a single issue voter, but such a move would drive me off.

I've always been at least tacitly supportive of gun ownership, but the last five years really cemented that position for me. I've been shocked by how easily totalitarianism can creep into a representative government. Not that we're there yet- but there's been a definite trend towards it in the last several years, and practically zero opposition from the "opposition party".
