yeah, we'll just switch words and that'll settle that, thanks condi, i've changed my mind about torturing prisoners of war now, thanks to your switching the words around. rendition doesn't sound nearly as bad.-------------

Speaking before she left the US, Ms Rice admitted that terror suspects were flown abroad for interrogation but denied they were tortured.

She said suspects were moved by plane under a process known as rendition, and that this was "a lawful weapon".

Germany is one of the countries reported as a landing spot

She refused to address claims that the CIA had set up secret prisons abroad where suspects are interrogated without reference to international law.

2. actually, I thought that
rendition is getting there (where ever there might be) so that they can then torture them. Sort of the ole one two punch.

3. Rendition is the kidnapping and spiriting away to shadowy secret holes

There is also "extraordinary rendition," which I gather is really over-the-top blatant kidnapping, though I'm not clear on what distinguishes garden-variety rendition from the extraordinary kind. It's all extraordinary to me. The torture comes later, whien they are safely out of range of observation or control - word is, the kidnapping planes are quite comfortable. I've got LOTS of links to articles and audio/video about this topic, let me know if you want any.

5. Whatever they want to call it, it's still illegal
But when has the law gotten in the way of this administration?

http://news.amnesty.org/index/ENGAMR511982005

. . .In a statement today, Ms Rice argued that rendition -- transferring detainees from country to country without legal process -- was permissible under international law. Although the victims of rendition usually end up in countries known to use torture in their interrogations, Ms Rice added that the US government seeks assurances on treatment from receiving nations.

"Flying detainees to countries where they may face torture or other ill-treatment is a direct and outright breach on international law with or without so called "diplomatic assurances". These assurances are meaningless. Countries known for systematic torture, regularly deny the existence of such practices," said Claudio Cordone, Amnesty International's Senior Director of Regional Programmes.
