1. Dean sticks to his guns.
He was against it in the beginning, and he's against it now. I believe history will vindicate his stance.

2. He's right.
The Bush's went to war for oil. The people over there know that. That's why they keep blowing up the pipelines.

We already know that any arguments the freepers like to use to cover up the real motivation for being there have been completely debunked.

3. I think it is a losing message from a standard bearer of the Party.
Cant win?
I think Dems need to redefine what is a "win" in admittedly meager terms, before the republicans do it for us - withdrawal from an autocratic, violent Iraq, that hopefully has some stability. Call it Egypt, if you will.
But honestly, for the honor and pride of those serving, chalking up a defeat is pretty harsh stuff.

6. The war never was with Iraq
The Iraqis aren't our enemies. So how can we win in Iraq?

We can't.

Not the hardliners who we will never get, but the middle.

10. You need to read my post.
The reasons you cite for staying have nothing to do with why they are there.

4. The current government is already fucked up. So even if we win we lose
Iraq has gone from a secular nation to a theocracy where they can have sex with 9 year old girls and claim it's moral.

7. The Soviets were in Afghanistan for 10 years....
....and still lost...

Fighting the same people who subscribe to the same ideology....

Only this time, the number willing to fight is exponentiallly greater.

Dean is right...The only way to "win" Iraq is to get out. As long as the US is in Iraq, the attacks will continue for years and years and years...

12. The Iraq War is like taking a baseball bat to a hornet's nest -
Edited on Tue Dec-06-05 01:59 PM by EOO
There's no way that this can be won, and either way, no matter what the outcome, it's going to sting for a long time.

18. I thought it was more like a game of "whack a mole"
Whack one down, and the others pop up out of their holes.

21. A hornet's nest is more dangerous than a game of "whack a mole".
Of course, the game of "whack a mole" could be applied to the way that the administration is treating us and the way it's treating our allies.

24. Picture a heavily armed mole
You "whack" him in one Iraqi city only to fight him in another. You never actually make any progress. The fighters just keep moving from on city to the next as you move in.

15. He should not say that
Edited on Tue Dec-06-05 02:19 PM by TheFarseer
Bottom line. If he wants to say we need a change in strategy or we should get out and let the Iraqis fight it out with some help from us, then that would be a good message. Of course we can win. If we drafted a million man army and shot anything that moved, we could "win" - not that I'm suggesting that. To say we cannot win is irresponsible, unpopular, uninspiring and just plain wrong.

20. So you are saying we CAN win if we send enough troops.
I consider that just plain terrible. Then we will kill more Iraqis, as well as raising our own death toll.

16. One of my local pundits paired Dean's words with Kerry's
and then regurgitated the usual "defeatist, cut and run Dems" talking point.

Trust "Primal Scream" Dean to come out and say what other Dems won't about their withdrawl plans for Iraq. That's how he referred to Dean.

Then he moved on to Kerry, saying that folks are just starting to backtrack and bring up what he said on "Face the Nation" on Sunday.

He said that Kerry must be having flashbacks to 1971 and Gengis (mispronounced) Khan to say something like "And there is no reason, Bob, that young American soldiers need to be going into homes of Iraqis in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, you know, women, breaking sort of the customs of the-of-the historical customs, religious customs."

He had a minor fit about that, saying "WE are not the terrorists, Kerry!" So what is my local pundit saying? That the women and children ARE?!

I almost made this it's own thread, but when I saw yours I thought I'd combine the two. But I was pleased when my local fool said that Kerry was flashing back to his younger self with those words.

And that's a bad thing?!

22. It was lost the day the first GI crossed the border into Iraq.
The "war" (if invading a prostrate nation and fighting a wrecked army can be called a war) has accomplished none of the original goals it set out to achieve.

No WMD.
No "terrorist connection" destroyed - in fact al-Queyda was non-existant in Iraq until after the invasion and now it's thriving there.
No 'stability' in the Middle-East.

It's basis was to make Nincompoop-in-Chief look tough and to make a nice fat profit in $$$ and votes. Alas, the neocons and neolibs rosy visions of cheering Iraqis, gushing oil, and a slew of "democracies" springing up were similar to the benefits advertised in "trickle down economics".

But, tha arms-industry and bodybag manufacturers are doing well.

23. Good. I'm glad he's telling the truth.
I'm sick of Dems who are only worried about being reelected and thus refuse to tell the truth about this war.
