3. I appreciate your desire to give Kerry another hard look after this
I hope others can be so persuaded. I thought his statement yesterday was an inspiring display of leadership in the raw and straight from the marrow of his bones.

EXCERPTS:

"We need to stand up to this president. They’ve already proven they can’t be trusted, they’ve already proven that they’re willing to mislead, and this particular plan for $87 Billion is top down, starting with Halliburton, and the other great friends of the President. It doesn’t do the job ...... I think it is the right thing to do to vote against the President’s plan; to force him to confront reality, and to force him to do what’s right for America."

“The best way to support our troops and take the target off their backs is with a real strategy to win the peace in Iraq - not by throwing $87 billion at George Bush's failed policies.... I will gladly and proudly vote for any proposal this President offers that protects the troops and provides an effective plan to win the peace.

”But I oppose spending $87 billion - at the expense of health care, education and domestic priorities here at home - on a strategy that does not protect the troops, and does not make America safer.”

4. I Did Not Like Dean's Position on the $87 Billion
if i understand Dean's position correctly, and I hope someone corrects me if i've misrepresented it, Dean would only support the $87 billion if it was funded by rolling back the "tax cut for the wealthy" ...

if that's his position, i think it stinks ... Dean should be against funding more madness in Iraq because it's, well, madness ... what the hell makes it OK to keep troops over there as "PNAC slaves" imposing the neo-con will on innocent Iraqis? I don't give a damn where the money is coming from ... i care where it's going to !!!

I'm really worried about Dean ...

5. His attitude is that of an accountant
when of course the matter is so much more complex and tied into a long term plan. I don't know what Dean's plan is. The last I heard he said: "We need troops in Iraq for the duration". ??? The duration of "what" praytell? The duration of our stay? That doesn't explain much. perhaps someone has an idea?

9. "them's the brakes"
i don't think Dean's "roll back the entire tax cut" makes for good politics ... i agree with what Krugman had to say about it ... i'm all for balancing the budget but i cannot understand how Dean thinks he's going to sell a "tax increase" to the middle class ...

democrats always need to be wary of the "tax and spend" argument ... this may be decent policy but it's terrible politics ...

and, in response to your Iraq analysis, I was the first to contact the Dean campaign and bring them to DU ... there were "very interested in finding out about all these liberal activists on the internet" ... Dean was the only candidate willing to say no on IWR ... and I considered endorsing him ... but then he did the same thing on IWR that he's doing on the $87 billion ... he said that if Bush showed evidence of WMD (which he did), we should give Saddam 60 days and then he would support the invasion even without the U.N. ... what kind of position is that? the war was wrong from day one because Iraq is a sovereign nation AND THERE WAS NO IMMINENT THREAT ... you've seen me beat up on Kerry for his vote ... well, guess what ... Dean was no better ... what hypocrisy ... his policy was "it's wrong today but it will be just fine to invade 60 days from now" ... the guy is a pile of contradictions ...

stay tuned for my Dean thread coming soon (a week or so?) ... i've really had it with him ... perhaps my fellow DU'ers are wiser than I but I have real concerns about Dean and I am deeply worried that he's like a truck careening down a mountain road without any brakes ... the good news is that there's no stopping him ... the bad news is that there's no stopping him ...

momentum is not always a good thing for political parties ... sometimes, a quiet, patient judgment is called for ... many of us appreciated Dean's standing up early in opposition to bush unlike many of the other candidates ... but in the end, we must choose the person with the best vision and the best ability to deliver that vision ... i'm afraid Dean's early support does not justify his current support ... more to follow ... stay tuned ...

11. Clark has already applied some brakes.
I don't really believe that there's no stopping him. I am reminded of Gary Hart in 1984. Same youth movement. Same momentum.
Mondale was the establishment candidate and he prevailed.
Clark has really changed the dynamic.
