http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-toxic02.htmlPeople living in 15 Chicago area ZIP codes would no longer be able to find out about toxic chemical releases in their neighborhoods under a Bush administration proposal, a new analysis says.
The information would still be available in another 100 ZIP codes in the area, but not as much as before, according to the Illinois Public Interest Research Group, which wrote the study.
Changes proposed last month by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would seriously weaken the Toxics Release Inventory program, under which industry must report releases of harmful chemicals, Illinois PIRG said Thursday.
"The rollback allows companies to keep more of their toxic pollution secret from their neighbors," said the group's environmental advocate, Frances Canonizado.
