Jim McDermott needs help. GOP suing his ass off, ruining a good man
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 09:48 PM by upi402
Dear XXXXX:

A wave of scandals is crashing over the Republican Party and its leadership. Despite attempts to run a government of secrecy; Bush, Cheney, DeLay, Frist, and their indicted lobbyist and friend, Jack Abramoff, are reeling from insiders who have provided information to the press and to the public, and eventually to the prosecutors.

My own direct experience with informing the public has been a long and expensive one. As a result, I am writing to all of you for financial support.
http://www.mcdermottforcongress.com/

My experience began late in 1996, when Newt Gingrich's team plotted to "spin" his Ethics Committee settlement... only hours after promising to do no such thing. A Florida couple taped a cell phone conversation about Newt's plot and provided it to me. I provided the tape recording to the press.

Newt's leadership gang couldn't win revenge politically, so they went after me financially by making a federal case out of it: Boehner v. McDermott. The vindictive GOP legal attack may cost me over a million dollars! Earlier this month, the U. S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. circuit again reviewed my case. The judges focused on a wide range of First Amendment issues.

An adverse decision will create an alarming precedent at a critical time: "tainted" information (such as leaks) could not be shared with the press, over the Internet, at meetups, rallies, or even house parties. Wouldn't the Bush Administration like that! A tool to muzzle whistle blowers.

We are taking our country back. Secrets and lies are succumbing to grassroots and sunshine. When Jack Murtha tabbed the War "a flawed policy wrapped in illusion," a colleague observed "The end is near! Murtha and McDermott agree on Iraq!"

In Iraq, at last, the end may be near... but there's no end in sight for Boehner v. McDermott. Costs mount up while we wait on our 3rd Appeals decision - or a 3rd round in District Court.

Your small donation at this crucial time will help in a big way. Donations can be made directly on my web site;
http://www.mcdermottforcongress.com/

It is clearer than ever that the principal freedom in this country is your right to know. Your immediate contribution will allow me to continue to defend that right.

Thank you for caring about our country and our government. Together, we will take our country back!

Sincerely,
Jim McDermott

3. I saw McDermott ar Michael Moore's Slacker Tour...
and it was moving. I have to say that the rage-filled roar when the corporate media was reffered to was heartening. Folks were more pissed about the media traitors than the * crimes and war lies.

And McDermott has always put his neck on the block before others dared to even speak. He is one of my heroes.

Thanks for the link, upi402.

McDermott doesn't have any corporate bail-out slush-fund...he needs the support he can get from the grassroots...after all, this does affect us all.

11. This shouldn't be a federal case
like he said, and it shouldn't bankrupt anyone,

but,

he was wrong to turn over someone's recorded phone message and turn it over to the press and then act like he didn't do it.

If he thought it was a crime, he should have turned it over to the FBI.

If he thought the press had to know, he should have given it to them publicly and proudly and taken his punishment.

If the parties were reversed, we'd be all over a Republican congressperson who slipped a recorded phone call of a Democratic congressperson to the NY Post or Washington Times.

Not a federal case, but he was wrong in how he handled receiving taped private conversations.

13. what's the difference between liberals and cannibals?
-cannibals don't eat their own.

neocons circle the wagons around vile, corrupt, phonies -and we would see our most ardent patron walk the plank for a drop to their ocean?

no wonder we lose, no unity. i could see it if he were a DINO or a betrayer of democracy. but he is not, he's on point.

i just disagree with letting him hang.
if we DARE play by their dirty little rules, they are in a frenzy to pole vault over a mouse tird. while they minimize much higher transgressions and support their fellow gangsta.

15. neocons monitored Dems computers, no? and... nothing
'whooosh' goes a handful of absofuckinglutley nothing.

Senate panel's GOP staff pried on Democrats

By Charlie Savage, Globe Staff, 1/22/2004

WASHINGTON -- Republican staff members of the US Senate Judiciary Commitee infiltrated opposition computer files for a year, monitoring secret strategy memos and periodically passing on copies to the media, Senate officials told The Globe.

From the spring of 2002 until at least April 2003, members of the GOP committee staff exploited a computer glitch that allowed them to access restricted Democratic communications without a password. Trolling through hundreds of memos, they were able to read talking points and accounts of private meetings discussing which judicial nominees Democrats would fight -- and with what tactics.

The office of Senate Sergeant-at-Arms William Pickle has already launched an investigation into how excerpts from 15 Democratic memos showed up in the pages of the conservative-leaning newspapers and were posted to a website last November.

With the help of forensic computer experts from General Dynamics and the US Secret Service, his office has interviewed about 120 people to date and seized more than half a dozen computers -- including four Judiciary servers, one server from the office of Senate majority leader Bill Frist of Tennessee, and several desktop hard drives.

But the scope of both the intrusions and the likely disclosures is now known to have been far more extensive than the November incident, staffers and others familiar with the investigation say.

The revelation comes as the battle of judicial nominees is reaching a new level of intensity. Last week, President Bush used his recess power to appoint Judge Charles Pickering to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, bypassing a Democratic filibuster that blocked a vote on his nomination for a year because of concerns over his civil rights record.

Democrats now claim their private memos formed the basis for a February 2003 column by conservative pundit Robert Novak that revealed plans pushed by Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Democrat of Massachusetts, to filibuster certain judicial nominees. Novak is also at the center of an investigation into who leaked the identity of a CIA agent whose husband contradicted a Bush administration claim about Iraqi nuclear programs.

29. It is very important to support Jim in this case..(with video links)
One reason is the precedent that would be set if the exposing the lies of cons like Gingrich is found to be illegal.

The other is just the simple matter of "Which side are you on?" McDermott served during Vietnam as a doctor, and saw the raw truth of that war, and he has been a staunch believer that we as a nation can be, and must be, better than that. He ran for office believing that people of good will have to be be in politics, and he has been attacked by the fascist right precisely because he stands against their schemes and their goals, he knows who they are, and he fights them.

Anyone who doesn't know who he is or what he stands for can see for themselves by using DUer liveoaktx's CanOFun video links. Just enter McDermott in the search engine at http://www.canofun.com/blog/default.asp and you will understand why they want to silence him and why it is important that we do not let their attack succeed.

I donated a small amount, not much, less than a day's pay (last year it would have been a half day's pay) but consider giving just one hour's pay, or even less. Every bit matters.
