Right after Dian's show--which was great on its own--I listened to the next show with Kojo Nambdi (sp). His guest was Ms Berry, former Chair of the Civil Rights Commission. She discuess her book "My Face is Black is True." What a revelation about slave reparations. It's not at all like I was brain washed to believe and all started with a women named Callie. Made me want to do some research on the issue. It was a very informative show.
Mary Frances Berry, former Chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights; and author of "My Face is Black is True: Callie House and the Struggle for Ex-Slave Reparations" (Random House)
In short on reparations. It was really about the US government's failure to give the benefits to former slaves who fought in the union army while the whites who fought received pensions and widow's benefits. Callie also felt that since former slaves paid taxes, they were entitled to receive services and benefits as other citizens. This was the real, and ignored, initial struggle for reparations and it's not just about cash payments to former slaves' heirs. Great show. Boy, the amount of true history we are ignorant of is amazing!
