but if i'm ever up there i'll try to seek them out ...

i used to have vague notions of starting an organic fast food restaurant, but I was always in a town where i could be pretty sure it wouldn't fly ...

4. I'm in Utah. Organic is gaining a lot of steam here. Utahns seem way into
natural health and herbs.

would only cut out using that annoying Flash animation on their website...Actually, it's not the Flash I have a problem with, it's the "mystery meat navigation" where you have to roll your pointer over some vague symbol to find out where their locations are, for example.

10. Agreed
Terrible Web site. Poorly designed, cold (with the blues and that particular shade of green). Ugh ugh ugh; absolutely nothing I liked about it.

11. Maybe they'll read our comments and work on it.
Or maybe we should send them an email with our comments?

If we can help them improve their website, maybe we can help improve their chances of success. And I hope they succeed, as I am sure you do as well.

I'll send them an email tomorrow. I trust you will as well, cher?

7. I wish someone would really define organic.
I grow a lot of my own vegetables and I refuse to use pesticides, even with my ornamentals, but I can't see how large farms that do this as a business can do this and be competitive.

8. No pesticides and no chemical fertilizers either...
Organic producers find their market with people who choose to pay more for organic stuff.

22. I'm the same kind of gardener.
We live with a few hornworms, aphids, and mites. They reduce our yields but so do the jays, squirrels, and raccoons. The raccoons were our biggest pest because they used to tear up our tiny lawn looking for grubs. We applied an organic grub control and haven't had the problem since. They do dig little test holes, but the lawn recovers quickly.

Large scale organic farms aren't prohibited from using pesticides. They are limited to certain ones that are approved for organic methods. Large scale farms use many of the tried and true methods of farmers a century ago, like planting cover crops as 'green manure' in the off season and crop rotation with a view to replenishing the soil nutrients. In our part of CA, fava beans are an excellent cover crop. They grow without any attention in our wet winters and the root system fixes nitrogen in the soil. The whole plant is turned under in the spring a few weeks before the summer crops are planted. My next door neighbor has been doing this for years and he has the most productive soil in the neighborhood.

We do have a looming problem now that the government has defined organic. The agribusiness interests keep lobbying for changes that water down the label so much that it will be as meaningless as 'natural' if they have their way.

9. I would be willing to bet that the next region to get one will be
the Pacific Northwest. And I would wager to say that the city will be Portland OR. Stonyfield Farms used to be in Portland and the same minds are behind this venture. I will frequent them anyday over the old standby junk joints.

17. As a mom of two young children, I would certainly welcome it!
Has any other parents out there notice the differeence in size and development of children raised on organic products and those not? I believe the growth hormone fed to cows is causing huge size deviations in kids, the long term effects I shutter to think about.

one here in Illinois. I am slowly trying to convert to all organic foods.Chipolte (SP) has free range chicken, so if I do eat out, I go there.

20. Welcome to DU tcookie5. I have adjusted to only compare costs between
other organics and not with non organics. I pack my children's food and drinks. I even go so far as to make them foods to take along for burger/hotdog outings. We don't eat mammals, so outings often conflict with their diets.

The hardest thing is pizza. Organic cheese is never found on pizzas and it is a common staple in children's outing. As parents and consumers, we can make attempts to limit the chemicals we intake, but unfortunatley not completely.

should invest in it and get in national!

the flat bread sandwiches sound yummy...especially the goat cheese, the mediterranean and the rustic sandwiches. The kids menu looks great too which is necessary for a successful fast food joint imo.

on edit: they could use more info on their investor page, that's for sure. My guess is that this would make a killing all along the west coast. I think it would do very well down here in Austin, TX too.
