Poll question: By and large what age group are people here at DU in?
By and large what age group are people here at DU in?

'Um...this is a poll because, I have a thread relating to a similar topic, except that's "what age is everyone" as in individually.

So, a few people thought maybe a poll on this topic might be better, so here the poll is, and there you have it.

28. You're right. I had a hard time with 30 till about 6 months before
my 30th, and then my grandmother died and I suddenly had a new perspective on life. I finally realized that I was a grown-up, as weird as that may sound.

I still can't believe it, though. 30. I just remember when my parents were in their 30s and it's hard to believe I'm the age THEY were when I was a kid.

27. As a fellow Gen X sometimes I think I'm just getting old
Then I ask my 20 year old cousin if it's just me or does the music suck pretty much these days.

His and his friends' general consesus was that the music pretty much is corporate crap. So you indeed are not the only one who misses the 90's.

I'm surprised more gen X-ers aren't more pissed off considering the employment scenario under the Shrubbery. I still think some of my old friends are scared of all the media hype and think the Teer-wrists are going to come and steal their new SUVs thanks to FOX news.

34. I'm 33 and I agree. There are some excellent bands now, though.
The Strokes are good, the Decemberists, a few others I can think of. Most of the stuff that gets actual air time now is total corporate garbage. Even K-ROQ out here in L.A., which really played alot of alternative music when it actually *was* alternative- they play mostly over-produced power pop shit now, too.

:/

only taking 40-50 or 50-60 alone is greater than 18-40. that is interesting. for some time i noticed many seem to be over 40 on DU. but never really realized how much in comparison to the others.

62. Maybe, political awareness is a forties kind of thing?
Kind of when you're done trying to get laid, or raising your kids, usually the light bill is getting paid and probably you've got a halfway decent job, you're not out in the bars until the wee hours and you have more time to think about things bigger than yourself.

What you say actually makes sense for my political awareness, and I'm in my early 20s.

I'm not having kids anytime soon, the constant driking got old really fast, and the bills aren't an issue. Guess I need to spend more time trying to get laid then, eh?

73. ROFL! When I say done trying to get laid...
I guess I mean done "chasing tail" - if, we're married, or similarly matched up. Not having to find it, chase it, convince it, (i.e. it already sleeps in our bed and we drink coffee with it in the morning), leaves a lot more time for other things... like reading the news. :-)

Disclaimer: This is a light-hearted generalization and my own humble opinion. No need to point out every nuance, or circumstance. It's not that serious.

67. In the pop, 38% of 20-80 range is under 40 (i.e., 62% of range is over 40)
Edited on Sun Nov-27-05 02:07 AM by pat_k
You would expect a 60-40 split between over and under 40.

In the population:

Roughly 38% of 20-80 range is under 40
Roughly 62% of 20-80 range is over 40

See earlier post for more on the DU age distribution vs. overall population.

From official election results (O-fishy as they are) turnout numbers for 2004:

43% 18-44
57% 45+

50. This is interesting....giving it a kick and an R
I too think the younger ones are out now - it will be interesting to see, because I always thought the majority were younger. I just turned 50, myself and damn, I can't believe I'm that old, but it's nice to see lots of others in my age group here.

53. Not to be morbid, but proves my point that in 15 years, 1/4 of DU will be
dead.

I think this is worthy of discussion on the state of Progressive Politics. I think the same is true in the reality-based world. I stand by my point that 25% of the current progressives will only vote in three more presidential elections. That's a frightening but honest figure. And I don't think we are replacing them 1 to 1 with the younger crowd. We really need to address this issue, or we are going to lose more elections in the next 30-40 years than we think.

57. I'm sure lots of us thank you for that reminder!
Also, my hair is thinning, my knees hurt, my cholesterol is too high, I'm overweight, and my eyesight and hearing is getting worse. Physically, I'm collapsing - and thanks for making me think about all that!

60. Looks like the demographic is 30 - 60 year olds, for the most part.
Good poll.

61. over 40 is at 76%
My theory is that people that have lived in the 'good old USA' longer are more concerned about the present state. Also, older people lived through the Vietnam era and are used to being more activist-like.

64. Distribution here compared to overall population
I was curious about the distribution relative to the distribution in the population. The range for youngest is a bit off (DU starting with 18 rather than 20), but here's what I found using numbers over at http://www.censusscope.org/us/chart_age.html.

20-29 19% overall, 9% DU (-10)

30-39 19% overall, 14% DU (-5)

40-49 22% overall, 35% DU (+13)

50-59 17% overall, 29% DU (+12)

60-70 12% overall, 11% DU (-1)

70-80 10% overall, 1% DU (-9)

Percent overall = total_in_range/total_20_to_80

We were depression babies, were called the Silent Generation when we were in college.

I not only remember where I was when I heard Kennedy had been shot -- I remember where I was when I heard FDR had died: walking to the store. People were standing on front porches crying. No one was sure who was now president.

81. I think you'd get more 18-30's if you posted the poll in the lounge
A lot of the younger set seems to hang out there, and seems to avoid GD. Have seen posts there in which they look down their noses at GD posters and vow to avoid GD like the plague. (Which begs the question, why come to DU at all, unless it's just to socialize in the Lounge?)

Aw heck...they need to come forward and tell us who they are. I was hoping that we DID have some people in that age group.

That's so FAB! They need to know how much we admire them.

92. 54 here.
Remember where I was when Kennedy was murdered; when we walked on the moon; worked across the street from the Grant Park riots at the Dem convention in '68; saw my brother and his friends come back from Vietnam, some in bad shape some not so bad; saw the Golden Era in movies, in my opinion, from late sixties through the seventies, at the show (not on DVD); saw the Saigon airlift on TV in real time; remember when Elvis died; on and on and on. Boy, am I lucky! It's been interesting as hell!

:hippie:

PS: Saw the Beatles in concert five times. I say "saw them" because you couldn't hear shit with all the screaming.
