Good news for inmates who aren't already tattooed
By Scott Reycraft Fri Nov 25, 8:49 AM ET

TORONTO (Reuters)- Canadian inmates can now get tattoos in prison parlors under a pilot program aimed at cutting down use of unclean needles and the spread of disease.

The Canadian government showed off its tattoo parlor program on Thursday at a prison in Bath, Ontario, where it is being tested.

"The program has advantages in that we can take a practice that already occurs, and make it safer," said Holly Knowles, a spokeswoman for Correctional Services Canada. "We're trying to reduce the amount of make-shift needles."

The government believes secret tattooing contributes to the spread of disease in prisons because of the use of shared needles.

2. Now they can diminish their chances for employment without the risk
of infection.

I wonder if the quality of the artwork will remain?

5. The vast majority of these inmates will be getting out. It seems at cross
purposes to facilitate what is recognized as a negative move for someone who will eventually face the job market, although I guess there's something to be said for the safety issue. Prison tattoos have their own cachet, as it were, and I wonder if these "approved" ones will look more mainstream or scream "gangster."

6. On the other hand,
tattoos are becoming more acceptable these days. I teach in an elementary school with several teachers who have tattoos.

3. Good idea
I've seen some homemade tattoo paraphernalia. It doesn't look healthy at all. Hopefully they won't legalize the prison-fermented liquor. ;)
