I need a new flag to fly........
anyone got any suggestions? I want to express two things: My distaste for the Stars and Stripes, and my wish for Peace. It is beginning to look like I may never fly the American Flag again, so I need a good substitute. Currently I am flying my White Cleveland Indians Flag...but it tatters as we speak.

43. Not the Gadsden flag. It's America's ORIGINAL flag and speaks volumes.
Don't Tread on Me meant Fuck you King George.

The whole point was that we would be a nation that would never strike first but will strike back if needed.

It was the flag that Ben Franklin preferred as he felt it represented the US best.

The stars and stripes were actually a concession to the royalists who still longed for their "colours" and their homeland, I guess.

but too many ordinary folks loose their balance at the very sight. They begin knocking on my door, or even worse trying to steal the flag right off my flag pole. I lost my porch flag like that last November.

If you are identifying the Administration with the flag, then I would say that Bush/Rove have won the game with you.

I don't care if you fly the flag or not. I don't think its a criteria for being truly "patriotic" (used in the pre-Bush sense).

Bush does not equal USA.

I am sad that you allowed yourself to link them...

They have linked 9/11 and Iraq...

They have linked Republican and Christian

and they have won, you now link Bush Admin and the flag...

and the Bush Administration are so far apart...if you were an Iraqi what would your first thought be when you saw that flag? Little mister liberal in Ohio, who though he disagrees with Bush, still flies the symbol of Death and Destruction?? I don't think so. Are you offended by the Confederate Flag at all, or is it just nothing? Are you offended by the Nazi Swastika Flag, or is it just nothing? I hope you get the point, and you aren't going to change my mind about what OUR Flag represents now.

you don't see the irony in that? It contains a symbol that is reviled by many, many Native Americans, another group of people that truly did face "Death and Destruction" from the United States.

and I agree with the folks who revile it.....but not too many native americans have knocked on my door, and none have attempted to steal it like my rightwing neighbors. Besides, it symbolizes my American League Team, and too my knowledge they have not killed or tortured anyone.

It is YOUR flag, it does not belong to a party nor any other group. Many have died for your right to fly that flag, and many including myself have served for your right to fly YOUR flag.

42. I use to fly the flag....
Edited on Fri Nov-25-05 05:43 PM by KerryOn
I would always have it up on the major holidays, like Veterans Day, the 4th of July and so on. During the first Gulf War I flew the flag everyday. I didn't have a light on it so I had to take it down every evening and put it up every morning before I went to work. At one time I even thought about installing a permanent flag pole in the front yard. I think the last time I flew it was July 4th 2002.

I no longer fly the flag, because I feel like my country has been stolen from me.

The seven red strips and six white strips represent the original thirteen colonies that gained us liberty.

The white stands for purity and cleanliness of purpose, thought, word and deed. Ask your self if this applies to our current leader and his administration.

The blue is for truth and justice. Again ask your self if this holds true for our current leader and his administration.
The stars represent the fifty sovereign states of our union. In my opinion this country is no longer united. The current administration has done everything it can to cut us in two.

And finally the red stripes represent the lifeblood of brave men and women who were ready to die for their country. Now ask yourself if the country that theses brave men and women shed their blood for still exists.

My wife and I are both in agreement that it will not go back up until the current administration is out of the White House. When that day occurs we will once again be proud to fly the flag of the United States of America.

On Edit: I ment to responed to #4

47. All flags are figuratively
dripping with blood. Some of the blood was shed unreasonably, sadistically, tragically. But a lot of that blood was shed in protection of American ideals, which flawed as they are, I still find uplifting.

I'm sure someone here at DU has a picture.

Personally, I would just fly the stars and stripes inverted.

23. Too bad it's gotten to the point that now when I see a flag anywhere
I automatically assume it's a Bush-ite. And sure 'nuf, if I look on their bumper I'll usually find a W sticker.

I'm not always right - my very left neighbors fly a flag, but I don't like how I have automatically become one of "them" who assume that flying the flag signifies allegiance with Bush. Resist!

and several bumper stickers, including the one from DU, one for the local Air America station, "Not fooled by the government," "Not fooled by the media," "Question Reality" and "Comfort the Disturbed and Disturb the Comfortable."

I doubt anyone mistakes me for a freeper despite the little flag in my window.

28. I've gone through this
I hung up a scotland flag, one of those ones with the "rampant lion"
red on yellow... and the wind tore it to bits. I hung up a union jack
and the wind tore to bits. I hung up a scottland saint andrews flag,
the one with the white cross on blue, and the wind.. (suprise). Same
same with an EU flag as well. Right outside now, the wind is howling 100mph+ The windows are bulging in, like mirrors in a funny house,
and air is blowing in all the seals of the windows. These arctic
storms are ungodly fierce here at first landfall, and will eat any flag.

So now, i've decided on prayer flags. They are designed to be torn
apart by the wind. It means the blessing of the intent of the person
hanging the flags was given flight many buddhist sparks of goodwill.
Prayer flags can be lovely, peace and goodwill belssings to all beings..
the univesal nature of buddhism, not exclucing an "unwashed", sees the
fluttering of the flag as the repeating of the prayer, over and over,
like a whispered song of love and luck, good tidings that could have
been bad. I guss that's all kinda deist, eh...

It's the perfect solution. Mine got very bedraggled because I started flying it right after 9-11, sick of seeing the American flags waving from every car and pole. Gotta buy a new one soon.

You can check out www.earthflag.net, or google earth flag-- various companies sell them but the original is quite well made, if rather pricey.

THEY can't have my flag. It means too much to me and they have no right to hijack the principles, however idealistic, that it represents.

48. I've read all the suggestions for you
and personally wouldn't fly the UN flag because let's face it, they have a lot of baggage, too.

How about this: go back into history and find the era you think most represents the ideals you honor, and fly that one?

But I'm wondering why you are so reviled? (as you mentioned in one response.)

Is it all because of your flag? Because I'm thinking that you might be thinking too hard and you would be wise to just do a bit of zen and sail past it, you know? This kind of crap can mess with your mind.
