how obscene are faith/character based prisons

Gov. Bush opens largest faith-based prison

Just beyond the razor-wire front gates of Wakulla Correctional Institution, a dozen inmates stood outside a chapel Wednesday morning, playing electric guitars and singing aloud about how they would "rather have Jesus than silver and gold."

Minutes later, Gov. Jeb Bush arrived to dedicate what's being called the nation's largest faith- and character-based prison.

Wakulla is an all-male prison in a barren spot 20 minutes south of Tallahassee. But it's about to gain national fame as it becomes the third and biggest state prison in Florida to convert entirely to the voluntary faith-based program -- a unique inmate training that the state first began to offer two years ago in anticipation of a lawsuit forcing the issue.

-snip-

Bush, a devout Catholic who has defiantly rejected civil libertarians' criticism of the state's faith-based programs, told the inmates how daily prayer has improved his life. He said he shares their belief in the power of faith.

and Jeb baby also had the arrogance to say:

"My expectation is that you'll be better behaved here, but also better prepared when you get out of here to live a productive life," Bush said.

most of the volunteers doing the faith thing are from local churches but they will try to bring in the faithful from other religions, but,:

"It's just so difficult to get volunteers of faiths other than Christianity to come here," said Marilyn Nase, a volunteer from a nearby Baptist church in Tallahassee.

aaarrrrgggghhhhh!

1. Pretty goddamn obscene
I can't tell you how my head exploded yesterday when I saw the article about the THIRD of these faith-based prisons being built in Florida.

2. My god going back to the future?
Early prisons in the US gave each prisoner a hair cut, a uniform and a bible... it did not work back then, and I somehow doubt it will work today

16. already
I believe a search might turn up a study showing that the recidivism rate is no lower for grads of these type programs than for the general prison population. I'm pretty sure I've seen mention of such.

18. True. It didn't work back then,
but, with new torture I mean Indoctrination methods we find we are able to brainwash, I mean Reeducate the modern prison populace.

Except for those fucking atheists, and Hindus, and Buddhists, and Muslims, etc.

3. This is such a joke...
I've worked in a medium-security prison, and I've known LOTS of inmates/convicts. It's an extremely common occurrence for these guys to "find Jesus" in a prison, whether or not it's faith-based. It's just as common for them to lose him once they get out. Like most people, they will do/say whatever they need to as long as they need to, to make their conditions as comfortable as possible. It's just human nature. So if Jebbie thinks he's performing some lasting service to society by backing these types of prisons, I think he's going to be sorely disappointed.

I'm not saying that a change of heart in a prisoner isn't possible, I just don't think this is the way to go about it.

6. Jeb will be making money off these prisons

the bushgang doesn't do anything unless it makes a profit for them.

we need to expose Jeb's money trail from these prisons.

8. I'm curious how he can make money from this
if it is state run? I work in a state run school and I don't think there's any way to siphon off those dollars.

What did you have in mind for the possibilities? Probably something I hadn't thought of yet.

11. private prisons charge so much a head and the company that builds

the prisons, and the company that runs the prisons - does Jeb have a connection to them?

4. I see nothing about "tax payer's dollars" or "education"...
it seems that using the Bible to control a group of people is back on the menu. It feels like the 12th century. Ahh, a good plague would make things feel more authentic.

You never know, this could work, but I doubt it. I'll have to see more evidence. The faiths would have to be more balanced and all religious proceedings would have to be unpaid volunteer only.

7. "Fake it to make it" Christians getting preferential treatment.
Anybody who's not "A Christian" or "Working the Program" or "professing a faith in Christ" gets sent back to the usual hellhole where there are no services and longer sentances. I suspect the faith based prison thing is just going to last until one of their early parolees kills a pretty white woman.

I also thought we had a constitutional amendment against such things. Don't tell me that the local Buddhist or Wiccan leader could get access to these places.

12. I have issues with "working the program," too
Edited on Fri Nov-25-05 02:42 PM by Blue_In_AK
but I'm not going to talk about that now because the last time I did here, I got roasted. AA and other "Anonymous" folks are very touchy, I've learned.

14. If the judge says you're Anonymous that's that. AA should quit letting
the courts pack their meetings with involuntary participants. It goes against everything that their program is(was) based upon. Personal responsibility and shared experience does not jive with "I'm here sign my sheet."

btw- I have never had an alcohol problem. I have just been around several people with court ordered "recovery."

9. I do believe they have stepped over the line on this one.
If I were convinced it works, then I could be talked into the ends justifying the means, but I read nothing about that.
