What's Up with Wingnuts Target "Boycott" Over Toys for Tots?
Please enlighten me if anyone has heard about this. Someone brought this up at Thanksgiving dinner and it almost caused a big commotion- I have to admit I just watched and had no idea what it was about. It looked like it was going to get ugly until the hostess said, "NO POLITICS TODAY!"

1. I haven't heard anything about that.
Maybe some of the toys are given to the children of gay couples or something like that. :sarcasm:

2. Here's what I heard...
Some wingnut sent me an email about boycotting Target Thanksgiving weekend because they are banning the use of "Merry Christmas" and using "Happy Holidays" instead... Sheesh. I told her that I was more pissed that Target had pharmacists who refused to fill Plan B prescriptions and that if I do decide to boycott Target, it would be for that reason, not for the stupid "Merry Christmas" thing.

5. Another response:
If I were part of the religious right, I would be more concerned about buying anything from Walmart - as it has forced suppliers to move their manufacturing to China - and thus earns its money buy (economically) supporting a government with a policy of forced abortions. For those on the religious (antiabortion) right, I would imagine that "Happy Holidays", meant not to offend those who are not Christians, pales compared to spending money which goes towards supporting forced abortions. Then again, those on the religious right tend to only take actions that cause no inconvenience to themselves and frustrate meeting the needs of others (that is "I wanna buy at walmart" vs. preventing some child living in poverty from receiving a Christmas present.)

6. The Jewish Holiday is the same day as Christmas i think,
this year. Maybe that is why they say happy holidays and not christmas. Who gives a rats as what the rw's think anyway. They are not Christians.

7. From the news this morning, I heard the boycott was because
they had instructed their employees to say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas". They were also boycotting Wal-mart on similar grounds.

We call for boycotts here often, so I'm not going to criticise someone exercising that right as well.

12. I don't either, but not for political reasons...
its because their products are generally inferior, and thus, not good bargains at all.

Just call me a snob. :)

10. Sounds to me like some Wal-Mart execs have
tried to devise a way to further divide the nation by planting false and misleading stories about their competitors.

If you don't think this happens, let me tell you it does. An oil company in a local town started a rumor about an Indian man who runs a franchise of a competing oil company (a very popular convenience store) to drive business away from him. By the time the rumor began circulating on the Internet, they had the guy cheering after 9/11 and refusing to sell merchandise to veterans.

A local talk show got wind of this and busted it open as a fraud, but it took that for people to finally get it through their heads.

And, what made me cringe, more than anything, is the fact that there are so many yokels who can't tell the difference between a man from India and an Arab. :eyes: (Not that local Arabs did anything like that, either - I'm just pointing out how stupid people are regarding foreign nationals).

17. Maybe they're little ruse backfired on them.
And, fundies are just stupid. It SHOULD be Happy Holidays because Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are around that time, too.
Fundies are insane.

13. I think it is connected to
the Salvation Army deal - Target won't allow the bellringers and their red buckets to stand in front of their stores.

16. It probably has to do with Target not being WalMart.
WalMart gives reliably to Republicans, right? And they're helping to make labor cheap.
