San Francisco Supervisors ask the FCC to look into KNEW's license

Brad Kava, 04:34 PM in Brad Kava, Radio

In the wake of talk host Bill O'Reilly's Nov. 8 inflammatory comments about Oreilly terrorists bombing San Francisco, The San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution Wednesday asking the Federal Communications Commission to closely examine the license of KNEW-AM (910), the station that hosts O'Reilly's show nightly at 7 p.m.

"If Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it. We're going to say, look, every other place in America is off-limits to you, except San Francisco," said the Fox News and syndicated radio host, in response to a San Francisco ballot measure that banned military recruiting on public high schools and colleges.

The San Francisco Board fired back unanimously against the host and his station, which airs a lineup of neo-conservative talk hosts, many of whom step over some people's boundaries of taste and decency, to get a reaction.

The station has been picketed by organizations after host Bill Bennett said that if "black babies were aborted" the crime rate would go down.

1. Oooh, great news! I hope they cancel the station and/or
fire O'Lielly. That would be a valuable lesson for others who support this scum.

10. Same People Who Own The Quake Own KNEW
Cheap Channel.

They're going for everyone's money...and I would imagine the corporate office loves all the promotion. While it may not help the ratings in San Francisco, it will get play in other markets as the right wing hate spewers will use this non-action (and it's a non-action) to whip up their own base...how their radio stations are being censored.

I'd ignore that bastard. He's gotten far too much publicity with this moronic statement and the longer opponents keep harping on it, the more it make O'Reilly and these goons look like victims.

Rememberm, the FCC is firmly under Repugnican control. That request will be circular filed and if there's any action taken against the station, it may be a couple thousand dollar fine (chump change to Cheap Channel)...and then they'll appeal it and it'll eventually get dropped...lots of our tax money wasted for nothing.

These bullies want the attention and they'll want even more as things get nastier and nastier. There's no FCC rules against saying what O'Reilly did. The only real recourse would be to launch a lenghty, expense and almost futile license challenge.

13. KNEW has been floundering too
they are not "THE RW Talk Station of the Bay Area" (that is clearly KSFO), they have picked up Stanford sports, and the (probably uninformed and informal) buzz is that KQKE is actually a bigger money maker then KNEW.

The Bay Area is a different market then even the Central Valley.

4. This could actually have been succesful before Reagan
and Clinton could have restored those rules with respect to licenses and renewals.

If the Dems ever get back into white house, the first AND I MEAN FIRST thing on their agenda- needs to be to get the FCC start the process of re-regulating the media. It would be a wildly popular thing to do- and it would take a veto proof majority in both houses to stop it.

6. Bill O'reilly loves Al-Qaeda and hates American fire fighters.
He hopes Al-Qaeda terrorists will kill American fighters in Coit Tower: "You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead." - See, that is proof that Bill O'reilly is a traitor! ARREST HIM IMMEDIATELY!!! :grr:

8. This is great news
What he said was over the top and I hope he is made to pay. Why can't we throw him into Gitmo as an enemy combatant for about 10 years?

11. I'm surprised this hasn't been done already
Edited on Fri Nov-25-05 08:03 AM by Fighting Irish
I'm still surprised CC hasn't dropped the show already. Ratings for him have been so terrible he's been moved to nights in tape delay. Must be some kind of contract thing, but I'm thinking if the guy issues a fatwa on a city, then CC should have an out in the contract.

Another idea is to go after the advertisers on his show (at least the local ones).

BTW: Looks like bin Reilly will be making an appearance in San Francisco today. Okay, not really:

http://www.indybay.org/news/2005/11/1785349.php

Bill O’Reilly, the talk show host who recently encouraged an Al Qaeda terrorist attack on the city of San Francisco will be making appearances at Union Square, North Beach and at Coit Tower on Friday, November 25th.

Press Release: November 23, 2005

When and Where:
Friday, November 25th
12:00- 1:00PM at Union Square Park (call cell for exact location)
2:00-2:45 on Columbus Avenue and Washington Sq. Park in North Beach
3:45pm at Coit Tower

What:
Bill O’Reilly, the talk show host who recently encouraged an Al Qaeda terrorist attack on the city of San Francisco will be making appearances at Union Square, North Beach and at Coit Tower on Friday, November 25th. O’Reilly will be played by a member of the San Francisco based political satire group the Ronald Reagan Home for the Criminally Insane and will be dressed as Osama Bin O’Reilly. O’Reilly will be carrying an enormous placard printed with his invitation to Al Qaeda,
“You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead!”
which will also be played over a loud speaker.

In coordination with this bit of street theater other members of the group will be encouraging people to help kick Bill O’Reilly out of San Francisco by filling out petitions to deny KNEW 910AM (home of O’Reilly’s Radio Factor in San Francisco) a broadcasting license.

Why:
On November 8th Bill O’Reilly issued this fatwa on his Radio Factor that airs in San Francisco on Clear Channel’s KNEW 910AM –
“And if Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it. We're going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you, except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead.”

The license for KNEW 910AM is up for renewal on December 1st. Two organizations, the Media Alliance and the Youth Media Council, have filed formal petitions with the FCC asking that Clear Channel’s KNEW 910AM be denied a license due to their clear and consistent pattern of abuse of the public trust by routinely broadcasting anti-American hate speech over the public airwaves. A copy of this petition can be seen at http://www.media-alliance.org/

“If encouraging a terrorist attack on a major American city over our public airwaves is not grounds for losing a broadcasting license than what is? Personally, I’d feel a lot safer if O’Reilly’s broadcasting range was limited to a cell in Guantanamo Bay. However I’m afraid that this would constitute torture, or at least cruel and unusual punishment for the other detainees at Camp X-Ray that would be forced to listen to him,” said Jeff Grubler, of the San Francisco-based political satire group, the Ronald Reagan Home for the Criminally Insane.
