So I read this joke to my devout hubby and BIL
Edited on Tue Nov-22-05 06:44 PM by GreenPartyVoter
after they heard me snickering to myself over it. Their response?

Stony silence.

Then hubby says, "that's borderline sacrilgeous"

What do you think?

Why God Never Received Tenure
_______________________________

He had only one major publication.

It was in Hebrew.

It had no references.

It wasn't published in a referenced journal.

Some even doubt that he wrote it himself.

It may be true that he created the world, but what has he done since then?

His cooperative efforts have been quite limited.

The scientific community has had a hard time replicating his results.

He never applied to the Ethics Board for permission to use human subjects.

When one experiment went awry he tried to cover it up by drowning the subjects.

When subjects didn't behave as predicted, he deleted them from the sample.

He rarely came to class, just told students to read the Book.

Some say he had his own son teach the class.

He expelled his first two students for learning.

Although there were only ten requirements, most students failed his tests.

His office hours were infrequent and usually held on a mountaintop.

1. LOL!
I'm an academic and a Catholic, and I think it's funny. What do your husband and BIL do for a living? Perhaps a non-academic wouldn't think it's funny.

7. Hubby went to Christian College and BIL to Bible college. They know
the general deal with academia. They're just wound too up tightly over their faith it all.

I went to Mount Vernon Nazarene College, where I met my hubby. I'm printing that out to show him. It's pretty dang funny! :D

32. BIL went to Bethany .. a Wesleyan school in New Brunswick. Hubby went to
ENC in Quincy, but their dad is a very old-fashioned Nazarene preacher so the lot of them can be pretty uptight over things like this. ;)

That's the liberal one of the Nazarene colleges. :D

Those old-fashioned Nazarene preachers can be a wee bit difficult to live with. How do they feel about you wearing jeans or playing face cards?

47. Jeans are k, but hubby's parents threatened to boycott our
wedding if we had had drinking or dancing at the reception.

So... we didn't have them of course.

Oh well. I am getting used to the legalism and just live around it.

Still, if he ever realized that I am more or less a unitarian universalist these days he would have a complete cow. And with his health like it is I would seriously worry about him having a stroke over the stress of it all. So.. I kinda live in a closet and just go through the motions by going to their church and making the best of it. :)

49. We ran into that, too.
We didn't have a bar, but my step-brothers smuggled in beer (thank goodness my in-laws didn't realize that), and we did have a live band for dancing. They weren't happy about that, but it was at my dad's house, and he put his foot down, saying that he was going to dance with me at my wedding. Since he was paying for it and it was at his house, they let that one go but then left before the dancing got going. *sigh* All those negotiations . . . I'm never going through that again.

You should've seen their faces at our kids' infant baptisms. They were so very uncomfortable, but they were there, which was important to us.

Keep your chin up. Eventually, he'll see through the emotionalism and manipulation and think that you might have been right all along (or at least give you the leeway you need). None of our friends at the Naz are Nazarene anymore, so there's hope. ;)

50. Well, he's certainly less strict in some way s than he was when hubby
was a kids. But I don't know that he can let go of all that legalism. It's his security blanket against a very scary world. :(

I am more concerned that my kids do not grow up to be like their dad and grandfather in that respect. But my dad, my brother, and me were all exposed to fundagelicalism as kids and teens and managed to break away. I would just as soon save my kids from being pod people or the pain of growing out of being one, but it's their journey to make. I can't dictate how their lives will go, just help as much as I can.

3. I think it's a hoot!
But then again, I think Christianity is one big fairy tale ... and that organized religion is a man-made tool to steal money from people and keep them in line.

If there's a hell, I guess I'll be first in line to burn in it. Meanwhile, I'm more ethical than most of the religious bastards I know who think that such a joke is offensive and sacreligious.

My take on it is this: If there is a "god" and he doesn't have a sense of humor, and can't appreciate different ideas, diversity, and sick jokes, I don't want any part of his religion.

5. I think its pretty funny. . .anyway, they had to come up with
the concept of sacreligious so as to make sure no one questions them. And of course, they don't want to be questioned because...they can't defend the existence of god.

I don't mean your hubby and BIL in particular, I mean all of religion in general. It's like when people say you can question a sitting president. Why not?

39. It can be tough. We generally avoid discussing religion and politics
which means we rub along well enough. But it gets tricky when it comes to what we will teach our kids.

Since he is very much into rules and regulations and God's law he is horrified that I would teach anything contrary to his beliefs, but he will have to get over the idea that they could go to Hell for believing the wrong things. They are my kids too.
