Katrina and the strange workings of Mother Nature
We are about 25 miles north of the gulf coast in South Mississippi. Property did okay but we lost several pine trees and a couple of oaks. Limbs, debris and stuff all over the back 2/3rds of our one acre. We have cleaned up alot and if it wasn't for DU I'd have alot more cleaned up, but we thought we lost our gardenias since they were covered by a pine tree. We got rid of the tree in September, the yard is still tore up and junky; we are waiting for the state to lift the burn ban. Last weekend the wife and I were messing about in the yard and low and behold, the gardenias are peaking out. We also have impatiens popping back up and our wave petunias which looked like hell not too long ago are freaking blooming now. Just eight days left in Hurricane season.

1. I was hiking in Yellowstone in the summer of '90.
It was the year after major fires "destroyed" much of the park. Part of the area where I hiked had burned the prior year. Amongst the carcasses of the old trees were fields of wildflowers the likes of which I had never seen in a lifetime of backcountry hiking. It was simply gorgeous.

Nature has a way of taking care of itself. We would do good to pay attention to that ourselves.
