Iraqi Leaders Call for Pullout Timetable

CAIRO, Egypt - Iraqi leaders at a reconciliation conference reached out to the Sunni Arab community by calling for a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces and saying the country's opposition had a "legitimate right" of resistance.

A day after the communique was finalized by Iraqi Shiite, Kurdish and Sunni leaders, Washington reiterated Tuesday that the United States would stay only as long as it takes to stabilize
Iraq.

The communique condemned terrorism but was a clear acknowledgment of the Sunni position that insurgents should not be labeled as terrorists if they don't target innocent civilians or institutions that provide for the welfare of Iraqis.

The leaders agreed on "calling for the withdrawal of foreign troops according to a timetable, through putting in place an immediate national program to rebuild the armed forces ... control the borders and the security situation" and end terror attacks.

3. Hmmmm....read THIS from last January MTP. The writing was on the wall.
Kerry on Iraq last January:

I think what Senator Kennedy is saying--and here I do agree with him--is that it is vital for
the United States to make it clear that we are not there with long-term goals and intentions of our presence in the region. I agree with Senator Kennedy that we have become the target and part of the problem today, if not the problem. Now, obviously, you've got to provide security and stability in order to be able to turn this over to the Iraqis and to be able to withdraw our troops, so I wouldn't do a specific timetable, but I certainly agree with him in principle that the goal must be to withdraw American troops.

Now, I wouldn't be surprised if the new government, as soon as it's possible, begins to negotiate some modality like that. And I wouldn't be surprised if they even asked us to leave in some way over a period of time. I wouldn't be surprised if the administration privately, behind closed doors, asked them to ask us to leave. I think there are plenty of ways to skin this cat. But the most important thing is that you've got to have stability.

What Iraq is after this is important to the world. It cannot be a haven for terrorism. It cannot be a completely failed state. Now, you'll notice the administration has backed off significantly of its own high goals of full democratization and so forth, and I don't think you're going to hear them pushing that. There are a lot of conservatives, neo-cons and others in Washington debating now sort of what the modality of withdrawal ought to be.

5. Yes - but how do you hold a liar to his word? It's not possible.
Edited on Tue Nov-22-05 02:35 PM by Solly Mack
Bush is a liar. He was a liar as Governor of Texas, a liar as a candidate for President, a liar during Selection 2000, and he has been a liar every single day of his regime...

Why anyone would believe a liar like Bush about anything at all is beyond rational and reasonable (not to mention, acceptable) comprehension.

No one can hold a liar to his word - the very nature of being a liar prevents it. But you can hold a liar accountable for his words.

Even though Bush said it - he's a liar - so he didn't mean it. And since he did lie, as is his usual course of action, you can't hold him to it. He's a liar. Nothing he says has any merit. He can't be trusted. About anything.

All we can shoot for is that Bush be held accountable....but he can never be held to his word.Ever. It's impossible - he's a liar.

6. That was Sam Walton.
He said "If some community, for whatever reason, doesn’t want us in there, we aren’t interested in going in and creating a fuss,”

I guess that was a lie too.
