WASHINGTON (AFP) - Top German intelligence officials have charged that the United States exaggerated claims made by an informant on Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction during the run-up to the war, a US newspaper reported.
Five senior German Federal Intelligence Service officials responsible for an Iraqi defector code-named Curveball told the Los Angeles Times that they warned their US counterparts that the source never claimed to produce germ weapons and never saw anyone else do so.
The German officials said US President George W. Bush mischaracterized information provided by Curveball when he warned before the war that Iraq had at least seven mobile biological weapon factories, the Times said in its Sunday edition.
