Schlesinger (appears) to back a Clinton/Clark ticket
This is a couple weeks old, but I just recently came across it, from his blog on HuffPo "Maybe Hillary should go to Iraq.....and take along General Wesley Clark-a possible dream ticket for '08".

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/arthur-schlesinger-jr/the-bush-disintegration_b_9815.html

The funny thing is watching all the HuffPo blog responders lecture Arthur Schlesinger on what a liberal is, I mean really who is Arthur Schlesinger to define a real liberal????...Oh yeah, he's Arthur Schlesinger.

1. Hmmm I see the Arthur Schlesinger seal of approval
does not quite carry the weight of a Cindy Sheehan on DU. Can't say I'm particularly surprised...

2. Me either.
Most people probably don't even know he was on Nixon's enemies list.

3. And had to defend himself in front of HUAC
and McCarthy, but he thought Stalin was a bad guy, so clearly he's an evil right winger...

14. Sorry, buddy
Schlesinger is a pompous windbag. I certainly know who he is, and find his historical scholarship at times laughable. That he would endorse a clear loser like Hillary is not surprising to me. And his hatred of Stalin is not the reason for my contempt; it may well be one of the few points we agree on. His desire to buy credibility and "respectability" by distancing himself from the left, is the reason for my contempt. He doesn't seem to be alone in this desire. And the snide jab at Cindy Sheehan/DU is more than unnecessary.

15. Yes he distanced himself from the far left

that was sitting around apologizing that Stalin guy that you also hate so much (as the Democrats should do now with those that sympathize with inherently illiberal philosophy's), and advocated for a social democratic "Vital Center", just about any historian of any ideological bend would find it laughable that you find his historical scholarship laughable, as he is almost without a doubt held in higher esteem then any living AMerican historian.

16. Laughable historical scholarship?
Tell me, what have you published that would compel me to take your opinion on historical scholarship seriously?

17. Clark doesn't.
He just doesn't want to see the Iraqi's any more hurt or future terrorists, a la the Taliban, take over Iraq's government and then plot to kill us later.

He was against this whole fiasco to begin with.

Can't say the same for Hillary.

6. Well unfortunately
as a politician in a Representative democracy, whose job it is to represent your constituency, it is kind of your job to "look which way the wind blows"...

7. that is NOT what I was referring to
I was referring mostly to the Iraq war, and not only her support for it, but adding more troops.

but from a practical view point, there is so much polarization that would be caused if she were to run, why would we want to start at that disadvantage, when there are so many others who don't bring that bagage

The most advid supporters for her to run are the repukes, and that should tell you enough. If she ran, she would be a uniting force for them, and a dividing force for us.

This is not meant to dis her, but that it would be more of an up hill battle for us to win in 2008 if she were to run

Incidently, I do believe she realizes this, and knows that 2008 would NOT be her year, at least NOT until we get control of the white house and Congress

9. that is definitely a winning ticket
and it is NOT because I necessarily agree with all their positions, but it would attract independents

You have to assume that mccain and hagel will run, both Name vets, and that would be one of the best choices against them, if for nothing else it brings NEW faces to the table, NOT the same old ones

Clark/Hackett would attract more female voters than Hillary.

Hadn't thought of Hackett for the Veep slot before, but it sounds like a great fit to me.

But I have the feeling she is the candidate the right wants to run.

19. Hillary can go team up with mccain
I just called her office and they confirmed that she was against Murthas immediate withdrawl from Iraq. I told them that Murtha's resolution said in 6 months or as soon as practicable.

Read the damn resolution. What is she, a RNC talking point recorder!!!

I will NOT choose her or her DLC cronies for dog catcher

20. A liberal dream ticket, yes.
I personally would love to see that ticket win. But the cautious, pessimistic part of me doubts that the pro-Hillary contingent could outperform the anti-Hillary contingent. And I have doubts as to the ability of a Northeastern Democratic presidential candidate to win an election anytime soon, sadly.

22. I don't know
Edited on Tue Nov-22-05 12:40 PM by BL611
I have sort of come to think recently that Hillary might be helped by the sort of intense polarization that she causes, the same way Bush has been. Bush has probably benefited far more then he has been hurt by the type of vitriol the left spews at him. The effects are obvious when you look at how low the democrats score when it comes to ideas on public opinion polls, not because the Dem's really don't have any ideas, but because the voice of those on the left who spew nothing but reactionary ad hominems, drowns out the voice of those trying to put forth an affirmative agenda. I have a hope that a similar effect may happen with Hillary in that the anti-Hillary right, is so crazed and irrational in their hatred they may well indeed scare the center and push them toward Hillary. But who knows? I guess we'll just have to see...
