So I suppose we still have him.
He will never give up or give in.

edit(spelling): What a screwed up world when I cannot even spell "peace" correctly.

24. Actually, I believe Woodstock was their last gig. Joe's solo
appearance (when he did "Rag") was totally impromptu. Joe just picked up a guitar and walked on after Richie Havens' set.
Didja know Joe was born in DC and named after Josef Stalin?
Evidently he was born into a rather politically active family.

They toured for a short while after Woodstock, and released a couple of LP's ("CJ Fish" and another one I can't remember).

With mostly new "Fish", however.

I still have a pretty good working knowledge of 60's/70's stuff.

I'm thinking it might be time for another "why didn't these bands make it" thread, but every time I specifically state it's 60's/early 70's someone always brings in later eras.

And as we all know, who cares about anything past '72... :)

Still can't figure out why Heads, Hands and Feet or Terry Reid never made it.

edit: Are you a Woodstock "vet" by any chance? There are a few of us on here, I think.

7. Fixin' to die Iraq
Well come on all you new young men
Uncle Sam's in a mess again
Got himself in a terrible jam
With a crazy Muslim named Saddam
So put down your bibles pick up your guns
We're gonna have a whole lot of FUN
And it's 1 2 3 what are we fighting for
Don't ask me I don't give a damn
I just know we gotta kill Saddam
And its 5 6 7 open up the pearly gates
Aint no time to wonder why
Big oil is startin to cry

Well come on all of you christian right
We all know you love a good fight
Now's your chance for a last crusade
The whole damn word has got to be saved
Just remember when your children all die
They'll be standing at the good Lord's side

Come on Dubya, better move fast
Our gas is burnin and it won't last
Your daddy started but he couldn't finish
Now's your chance to make your own image
Aren't you glad you don't have sons
Cause were callin up the guard for this one

33. I had thought earlier of a more "censorable" line that would fit...
with the rhyming ending in the same consonants. I'm sure most here could guess how that would go...

How's Country Joe's singing these days? Does he feel up to doing a recording of these? If not, perhaps he should team up with Steve Earle to help him out! I'm sure a song featuring both of those guys would spread like wildfire to both Vietnam and younger generations!

23. Support the Troops by Country Joe McDonald
Support the Troops
Copyright © 2005 by Joe McDonald

Beat the drum, wave the flag,
For those who won’t be coming back.
Numbers rising, build another Wall
For those who answered the Country’s call.
Support the troops
Support the troops

Gold Star Mothers, Gold Star Dads
Left with nothing but a folded flag.
Gold Star Brothers, Sisters too
Feel their pain, it could be you!

Support the troops
Support the troops

Chorus:
Chicken hawk, draft dodging, son Of A Bush
Look at all the damage you did!
American war in the Holy Land
Blood for oil, not in my name!
Oh, not in my name
Oh, not in my name
Oh, not in my name

Some day soon, don’t know when
We’ll see the wounded women and men
Lining the walls of American streets
Hands out begging for something to eat.
Support the troops
Support the troops

Forgotten heroes from a forgotten war
Wondering "What were we fighting for?"
World War III around the bend
That’s what we get with the George Bush Plan.

Support the troops
Support the troops

Chorus:
Chicken hawk, draft dodging, son Of A Bush
Look at all the damage you did!
American war in the Holy Land
Blood for oil, not in my name!
Oh, not in my name
Oh, not in my name
Oh, not in my name
Not in my name
American shame
Not in my name
American shame.

22. Hell yes, I saw him at an anti-war rally in 1967 .....
in Golden Gate Park on May 1 playing on a flat bed truck outside of Kesar Stadium & then inside as well with Coretta Scott King as featured speaker.
It was the first simultaneous rally against the Vietnam War, occurring in San Francisco and New York City.
I was only 10, my parents took me to it & I still remember it.

IIRC, the estate of the guy who wrote a tune with a similar melody, "Muskrat Ramble" has a public injunction on him performing it. Too bad, really...

BTW, Country Joe did some other great albums, "paradise with an Ocean View" is a terriffic album.

36. Update - With apologies to Country Joe
For a project I'm working on, just last night I did a bit of a rewrite on his Fixin' to Die Rag. Thought you might enjoy.

FixinÕ to Die Rag
With apologies to Country Joe McDonald

Yeah, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He's got himself in a terrible jam
Way over yonder in the sands of Islam
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is the land of Islam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on generals, let's move fast;
Your big chance has come at last.
Gotta go out and get those Ôheads Ñ
The only good terrorist is the one who's dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is the land of Islam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Huh!

Well, come on Wall Street, don't move slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go.
There's plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of the trade,
Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on olÕ Saddam.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is the land of Islam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your kids off to the land of Islam.
Come on fathers, don't hesitate,
Send 'em off before it's too late.
Be the first one on your block
To have your kid come home in a box.

And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is the land of Islam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

51. I remebered two others by Joe that I love...
Kiss My Ass
I got out of school and I was feeling kinda down,
I thought I'd join the Army just to take a look around.
I went on down to the recruiter man
And that's when all my troubles began.

Chorus:
Well, I've been up, down and around
This country more than a couple of times,
But I never knew until I got into the Army
That thinking for yourself was a crime.

Get over here, stand over there,
Let's see your identification.
Shut your mouth, son, get back in line,
We're sending you to South East Asia.

Well, they gave me some shoes that hurt my feet
They gave me some food not fit to eat,
They told me that I wasn't fighting alone,
They sent me to Saigon and they stayed home.

Chorus:

One, two, three, four,
We don't want your fuckin' war,
A, B, C, D,
Get someone else, hey don't get me,
Left, right, left, right,
You know the whole damn thing puts me uptight.

I done my duty and I fought my fight
And I thought I knew I was doing right,
But that's all over, I'm free at last,
An' if they want any more, they can kiss my ass.

Chorus:

...And my all time favorite:

Tricky Dicky
Late last night I was watchin' the tube
When I saw the most incredible thing
They built a new mechanical man
Looked just like a human being.
I started to become terrified,
Good God it was makin' me sick
And then I began to realize
It was no one but Tricky Dick.

Yes, it was Tricky Dicky from Yorba Linda
Hip hip hip hurrah.
Tricky Dicky from Yorba Linda
Hip hip hip hurrah.
He walks and he talks, he smiles, he frowns,
He does what a human can,
It was Tricky Dicky from Yorba Linda,
The genuine plastic man.

Chorus:
There is no can't in American
Or so we once could say
But now our boys won't fight no more
To bring us victory.
Where are the mountain majesties
Above the fruited plains ?
Who will come to lead us
In our hour of pain ?

Chorus:

Oh my God, it's terrible
Here in the U.S.A.
The water's polluted, the economy's crashing
And can someone save the day ?
The war keeps going on and on
And the kids won't respect the cops,
It's even said that God is dead,
When will it ever stop ?

CHorus:

And across the garbaged highways
From the oil-drenched plains
Now we'll see a victory,
America shall rise again.
Past the word that the buffalo heard
To the home of the free and the brave,
He's Tricky Dicky from Yorba Linda
Hip hip hip hurrah.

Chorus:
